Caravaggio's The Taking of Christ famously depicts the events of the evening of Holy Thursday, but there's another (very Irish) Easter link to the painting, which is actually key to how it ended up on our walls - the events of the 1916 Rising.

I find it difficult to believe a decade has now passed since we lost Shane MacThomais.
A wonderful historian who knew every inch of Glasnevin Cemetery, a great messer and someone who (then!) young guides took a lot of inspiration from, to his never-ending horror and amusement in equal measures 😂
This competition is a great way to remember him. Be sure to share with teachers and students.
In memory of Shane MacThomáis, we're proud to launch our first school essay competition.
We hope the essay competition will encourage kids to engage with history, and foster an interest in the subjects to which Shane dedicated himself.

Thinking about the tantrums towards Ireland, it is surely only a matter of time until they rename it, but Eamon de Valera Forest ( יער איימון דה ואלירה) near Nazareth was planted in 1966.
Dev actually visited Israel in 1950 (he was out of office at the time) in the company of Robert Briscoe, a Dublin Jew and veteran of the revolution who went on to become Lord Mayor. Together, "they dined with Ben-Gurion at Chief Rabbi Herzog's home."
Not surprised but greatly saddened to see that Shane McGowan had died. He was one of our most eloquent poets, and the first three Pogues albums are works of extraordinary beauty. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis. youtube.com/watch?v=jlfr1rCB…

Ten years ago #onthisday Seamus Heaney died.
In this clip from 1972, the Nobel Laureate encounters an ancient and mysterious pagan statue on Boa Island in Lough Erne and imagines what the old gods in Ireland were like, before the arrival of St Patrick.
Ulster in Focus: The Loughsiders, 1972
Irish poet Seamus Heaney explores the islands of Lough Erne in Northern Ireland. The enigmatic two-faced stone statue on Boa Island offers a glimpse into the pre-Christian world of ancient Ireland.
