Wizards needs to view organized play as a long term investment in the game. Yes, Commander is king at the moment, but who knows what the game will look like in 5 or 10 years? Who would have predicted Commander's rise 15 years ago? More support for 1v1 competitive play seems like a great hedge against an unknown future.

Sorting out my higher end stuff now. When my son builds commander decks, I am fine with him pillaging my collection for sub $5 cards, but I think it’s unfun to let him beat up on less MtG enfranchised kids at the LGS with my expensive cards.
