My beloved sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, has been unjustly imprisoned by the Chinese regime for over eight years. Her suffering reflects the anguish of countless families torn apart by the CCP’s brutal repression. Tomorrow at 5 PM at the Lincoln Memorial, voices will rise for those silenced and unjustly imprisoned. Although @AHakimIdris and I are overseas attending an international conference, my brother @DrRishatAbbas and my niece @ziba116, Gulshan’s daughter, will stand in solidarity with countless others. I urge everyone to join them. Your presence matters. Your voice matters. We must never allow the world to forget. Silence is the oxygen of tyranny. Let us break that silence together. China's massive overreaction to a soccer star's comments about Mao, media blackouts, forced apologies, etc. Actually shows that Mao was a dictator. In fact, it shows that the country is still under a dictatorship and that it now has the power to enforce censorship overseas.
International soccer star @KMbappe should not apologize for calling Mao Zedong a dictator. Mao was a dictator, and by orders of magnitude, he did more harm to the Chinese people than a comment from a soccer player ever could. Mao was the leader of the CCP for decades and his dictatorship and disastrous policies killed tens of millions of Chinese people in the Cultural Revolution, the Great Famine, and other atrocities. Involved in the Party from its first national meeting in 1921, Mao is the principal historical figure for a Party that continues his practices of oppression and ideological purges. For decades, the CCP has denied the Chinese people basic human rights including freedom of expression and freedom of religion. These are rights enjoyed by Mbappe and millions of people around the world and Mbappe should exercise this opportunity to tell the horrific truth about Mao’s dictatorship. The real disgrace in this news story is the companies rushing to apologize so they can continue to do business in China. The CCP is the largest oppressor of the Chinese people and their human rights, and those businesses that work with the CCP help normalize its crushing brutality. reuters.com/business/media-t…

An insightful piece from China Decoded exposing the hypocrisy of the Chinese Communist Party, where criticism is treated as an offence while intimidation and repression are normalised. Well worth reading. china-decoded-nw.beehiiv.com…

The Chinese Communist Party is absurd. Mbappé was correct - Mao was a dictator, one of the most bloody dictators of all time. He killed between 40 million and 70 million people, more than Hitler or Stalin. Mbappé should not apologise - the CCP should! bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv62…

Mail: Crossbench peer Lord Alton, who co-sponsored the amendment with Lords Markham and Camrose, said: 'We need to be much clearer about who is threatening our security instead of playing footsie with hostile regimes. 'There's no point telling everyone to stock up on non-perishable foods and drinking water while we go on with business as usual with states that are launching daily cyber-attack” dailymail.com/news/article-1… Extract: Lord Alton of Liverpool (CB) “…So why have I signed Amendment 164? Part 4 of the Bill rightly equips the Secretary of State with formidable powers to issue directions in the interests of national security. Yet, as the Bill stands, those powers risk operating in a strategic vacuum. If we are to empower Ministers to intervene decisively to protect our essential services and our critical supply chains, that intervention must be anchored to an objective, statutory assessment of who threatens us. We cannot defend what we value against an adversary whom we refuse to formally identify. Amendment 164 provides that essential statutory spine by establishing a clear, maintained register of foreign powers that pose an acute risk to our critical network and information systems—something that came home to us last week with a notable attack on cyber systems. We do not necessarily know by whom, but we can no doubt guess. We certainly know that, in the past, the National Health Service was subjected to attacks: in that case the NHS was attacked by the regime in North Korea. Critically, this amendment does not create a political blacklist, though. It is not subject to diplomatic whim; it is an intelligence-led mechanism rooted in the hard, objective assessments of GCHQ. Where our intelligence agencies have confirmed that a foreign state or its proxies have perpetrated attacks against our essential services within the last seven years, or where they issue clear warnings of imminent peril, that state must be listed. The definition must be clear-eyed about modern authoritarian governance. In the People’s Republic of China, for instance, the state, the military and the Chinese Communist Party are inextricably fused. To assess state-backed cyber threats while ignoring the governing political party that directs them would be wilful blindness. This amendment closes that semantic loophole once and for all….For far too long, across successive Administrations, our critical national infrastructure has been treated with commercial naivety rather than strategic discipline. By requiring the Government to conduct this review and lay a coherent action plan before @Parliament within 6 months, this amendment ends the era of bureaucratic drift. Let me end by referring to the inquiry that I chaired on behalf of the @HumanRightsCtte into transnational repression. Our domestic policy’s failure is illustrated by the reluctance of the Government to act on the recommendation that the committee unanimously made to place the People’s Republic of China, which we found to be the state that was the most responsible for transnational repression in the United Kingdom, even more than Russia or Iran, in the foreign influence registration scheme’s top tier... I would be grateful when the Minister comes to reply if she is able to give us any information about whether @DanJarvisMBE , who is responsible for security issues and who promised to continue to keep this issue under review, has done anything further to act on our committee’s recommendations. Note too concerns raised by the Intelligence and Security Committee…Strategic ambiguity has been the order of the day, & does not deter authoritarian regimes; it merely invites opportunistic aggression. If we are serious about building genuine national cyber resilience, we must replace vague administrative discretion with an empirical, transparent & accountable framework. I urge Government to embrace this vital measure and to accept Amendment 164 @TomTugendhat @alexsobel Editorial:
My speech in support of the successful amendment last night in @UKHouseofLords which will create a register of foreign powers that pose an acute risk to our critical network and information systems. We need to be much clearer about who is threatening our security - instead of playing footsie with hostile regimes. No point telling everyone to stock up on non perishable foods and drinking water while we go on with business as usual with states that are launching daily cyber attacks and with worse to come. The amendment now goes to @HouseofCommons. Especially in the light of last week's cyber attacks I hope that MPs will act on this wake up call. @andyburnham @KemiBadenoch @EdwardJDavey @Nigel_Farage @ShabanaMahmood @wesstreeting

This controversy is absolutely nuts. The Mao revisionism is *wild*, with state media demanding that foreigners bend the knee to an excrescence who killed tens of millions of their own ancestors. This ridiculous headline, together the humiliating capitulation of the sports world. Mbappe said something that anyone who has had a passing glance at history knows: Mao was not merely a dictator, but the biggest killer of the last century. In case anyone was wondering about PRC influence in sport, you have your answer. And in case anyone was wondering about how quickly “private” Chinese companies (sponsors) can be mobilised to do the bidding of the Party State, voilá. Getting the picture yet? This is the Whole-of- State approach in action people. Everything is the Party, and nothing can challenge it.
Major brands in China have dropped Kylian Mbappé over a clip in which the French football megastar appeared to mock Mao Zedong, China’s modern founding leader. vist.ly/5q5xz

Mao killed tens of millions of his own people - the bloodiest dictator of the Twentieth Century. Pass it on.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Mao Zedong is under any single social metric a dictator. Not a single popular election, single government party and lifetime leadership. Not even taking into account the millions of deaths under his reign. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong

Every bill is a China bill! This one needed amendment because, without it, we’d have ended up sending sensitive data to the CCP. Huge congrats to @jayapathak_ and a long list of IPAC members who made this happen. 5th law change in the UK since founding.

chinese.uhrp.org/insights/%e…

This document is the fruit of six years of consensus building on China. Over 50 debates in the UK alone, countless interventions, and a hell of a lot of graft, Parliament (and the public) have a new consensus. Only the government lags behind. But not for long.
