When we test spatial memory in virtual reality there are lot's of different aspects that might affect it vs. the real world, such as movement, interfaces, affordances, and even Reality Modality - the basic knowledge of knowing that we are in a virtual environment.

We isolated this by 3d scaning a room, and then running participants through a spatial memory test in it such that they walked the same room, had the same interfaces, same environmental effects (noises, etc.), and differed only in whether their headset was in VR mode or AR mode.

This New Yorker article has some quotes from me about my lab's project researching the effects of GPS jamming. I think this might be the first time stuff from my own lab reaches non-scientific press? newyorker.com/news/annals-of…

5/6 This result extended also to epilepsy patients, which are a key population in spatial neuroscience, as they are one of the few windows to invasive brain recordings in humans.

6/6 Finally, a single test-case patient with a chronic implant performed our task as well, and we could also see strengthening of movement related theta between the two versions of the task.

(1/n) This is the Soroka Medical center. It's across the street from campus, and was hit by a targeted ballistic missile from Iran this morning. My lab had several rehabilitation research projects running there using XR tools we developed.

(4/5) Ironically, one of my students' tasks there today was getting a better image of the ward's corridor in which we ran the experiment response to reviewer 3's request...

(5/5) That line in the response letter now needs to become "The experimental environment has been destroyed by a ballistic missile limiting our ability to provide the requested additional images ."
