Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says the party is ready to work with other political parties to establish stable coalition governments following what he describes as a historic performance in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Addressing the media, Hill-Lewis said the election results presented the DA with an opportunity to turn around several municipalities and cities across the country.
The DA says it will be the only party to govern a metropolitan municipality with an outright majority, following a strong victory in Cape Town. He says it has also emerged as the largest party in four other metros – Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Nelson Mandela Bay.
The party expects to gain approximately 104 additional wards and 233 councillors nationally.
Hill-Lewis also highlighted that roughly one million black South Africans voted for the DA, describing this as evidence of the party’s growing support across communities.
He thanked voters for their support, saying the DA understood the responsibility that came with the mandate.
COALITION TALKS
Attention now turns to coalition negotiations, with the DA confirming that it has already started engaging other political parties to establish stable governments.
Hill-Lewis said the party wants to bring parties together around a shared programme focused on effective service delivery and good governance.
He identified key priorities as:
Reliable water and basic services.
Safer streets and communities.
Job creation and an environment conducive to business growth.
Zero tolerance for corruption.
Merit-based appointments.
Sound financial management.
Stable and accountable local government.
The DA says it is prepared to work with any political party willing to put residents first and commit to these principles.
Hill-Lewis stressed that coalition agreements would be made public once finalised, although negotiations would not be conducted through the media.
He said the DA’s immediate priority was to ensure that municipalities deliver meaningful improvements to residents’ lives.
Hill-Lewis described the election as an important step towards the DA’s ambition of becoming South Africa’s largest political party.
He said the party would use its growing support to strengthen its presence in communities and demonstrate that capable governance can improve people’s lives.
He concluded by saying the DA was ready to work with other parties to build stable, inclusive and accountable governments.

POLICE CLAMP DOWN ON WILDLIFE CRIME: FOUR ARRESTED AND TWO PANGOLINS RESCUED
Four suspects were arrested for the alleged unlawful possession of endangered species after two live pangolins were found inside a vehicle during an intelligence-led operation at Waterfall Mall in Rustenburg on Wednesday, 04 November 2026.
The operation followed information received by Crime Intelligence (CI) Ivory Park, regarding a group of suspects who were allegedly involved in the illegal trade of endangered species. The information indicated that the suspects were in possession of two female pangolins, which they intended to sell to potential buyers for approximately R500 000-00 each.
Following the information, a cross-border, multidisciplinary team comprising members of Crime Intelligence Ivory Park and North West, SAPS Ivory Park Task Team, Phokeng K9, Rustenburg Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Safeguard Risk Services was assembled and deployed to the area.
The team proceeded to the parking lot at a Mall in Rustenburg and kept observation. A white BMW, in which the suspects were travelling, was seen entering the mall and was intercepted by the operational team.
Permission to search the vehicle was granted and upon searching the vehicle, two live pangolins were found inside the boot. When questioned about the endangered species, the four suspects, aged between 38 and 51, could not give a reasonable explanation and were subsequently arrested for unlawful possession of endangered species.
The vehicle was also found to be affixed with false registration plates. It was seized for further investigation.
Members of the Rustenburg Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment were called to the scene. The two pangolins were rescued and taken for safety purposes by members of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
The estimated value of the pangolins is +-R1 000 000.00(One Million Rands)
Further investigations are continuing to establish the suspects' criminal network.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrates' Court on Friday, 06 November 2026, to face charges of unlawful possession of endangered species in contravention of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 10 of 2004.
The Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams, commended all the units involved for their excellent collaboration and swift action that led to the rescue of the pangolins and the arrest of the suspects. He emphasised that the SAPS remains committed to protecting the country's endangered species and bringing those involved in wildlife crime to justice.

THREE LIFE SENTENCES FOR MAN CONVICTED OF 119 CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES
-WELKOM, FREE STATE
The NPA has welcomed the sentencing of 37-year-old Christiaan Francisco Fortleza van der Linde, who received three life imprisonment sentences after pleading guilty to 119 charges involving the sexual abuse and exploitation of three minor children.
The offences occurred between 2015 and 2024 and included rape, sexual assault, grooming, child trafficking, kidnapping, attempted murder and the creation, possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material.
The accused exploited positions of trust to groom and repeatedly abuse his victims, aged between 11 and 17.
He also created and distributed sexually explicit material involving children.
In one particularly disturbing incident, he kidnapped and trafficked a second victim and attempted to murder the child in an attempted murder-suicide.
The Welkom Regional Court imposed:
Three life sentences for two counts of rape and trafficking in persons.
Additional prison terms for attempted murder, sexual exploitation, grooming and other offences.
Entry into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, prohibited from working with children and barred from possessing or using electronic devices while serving his sentence.
The court rejected the defence’s request to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentences, agreeing with the State that the crimes formed part of a calculated and sustained pattern of abuse.
The NPA highlighted the devastating psychological impact on the victims, with two reportedly becoming suicidal as a result of the abuse.
The NPA says the sentence demonstrates its commitment to protecting children and ensuring that those who exploit and abuse vulnerable minors face the full consequences of the law.

EXTRADITION HEARING POSTPONED PENDING FINALISATION OF FIREARM CASE AGAINST ALLEGED UK FUGITIVE
@NPA_Prosecutes
The extradition proceedings against alleged United Kingdom fugitive, 46-year-old Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, have been postponed by the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court to 7 December 2026.
The postponement will allow for the finalisation of the Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) process and the conclusion of plea and sentencing proceedings in his firearm and ammunition case, which are scheduled for 10 November 2026.
The United Kingdom authorities submitted a request for Mutual Legal Assistance to South Africa, seeking the handover of electronic devices seized from Tshuma.
The request was authorised by the Minister of Justice in terms of Section 7 of the International Cooperation in Criminal Matters Act 75 of 1996.
Following consideration of the evidence presented, the court granted the order sought in terms of the MLA request. The cellphone will accordingly be handed over to the United Kingdom authorities to assist with their investigations into the murder charges Tshuma faces in that country.
Tshuma has entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the State in terms of Section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act. In terms of the agreement, he pleaded guilty to charges relating to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as contravening the Immigration Act.
Tshuma is wanted in the United Kingdom on three counts of murder. It is alleged that, in early July 2026, in Bedford, Bedfordshire, he murdered his wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, and their two children, Natalie Tshuma and Nala Tshuma.
The NPA is ready to proceed with the extradition proceedings and remains committed to ensuring that the matter is dealt with expeditiously and in accordance with the law.
