Irrefutable Evidence that Seventh Day Adventism is a Prophetic Movement
"We are God's commandment-keeping people...Messages of every order and kind have been urged upon Seventh-day Adventists, to take the place of the truth which, point by point, has been sought out by prayerful study, and testified to by the miracle-working power of the Lord. But the waymarks which have made us what we are, are to be preserved, and they will be preserved, as God has signified through His Word and the testimony of His Spirit. He calls upon us to hold firmly, with the grip of faith, to the fundamental principles that are based upon unquestionable authority." - Selected Messages vol 1 pg 208
I'll pick one of those fundamental principles: That the 2300 day prophetic period of Daniel 8:14 terminated in 1844.
So how do SDAs get to 457BC as the commencement of that prophetic period?
Angel Gabriel explained everything about the vision of Daniel 8 to Daniel except the prophetic period in verse 14. For this cause Daniel was perplexed and even became sick thinking about it.
Daniel 8:27 - And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.
The answer comes in Daniel 9. After much prayer and fasting, Gabriel returns to clarify the 2300 day prophetic time
Daniel 9:23 - At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
Gabriel informs that 70 weeks are determined/cut off for the Jews...cut off from where? the vision of Daniel 8 which Gabriel has come to explain has only one time prophecy...the 2300 day prophecy. The first 70 weeks are determined for the Jews for the accomplishing of certain things
Daniel 9:24 - Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
So the 2300 day prophecy commences where the 70 weeks begin. This is what Gabriel next informs Daniel
Daniel 9:25 - Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
The command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem was given 457 BC. But how can we know for sure?
There are 3 decrees and a fourth which is a commission.
1. Cyrus's decree (536 BC) Recorded in Era 1:1-4
2. Darius's decree (519 BC) Recorded in Ezra 6:1-12
3. Artaxerxes' decree (457 BC) Recorded in Ezra 7
4. Nehemiah's commission from Artaxerxes (444 BC) Recorded in Nehemiah 2:1-8
Of all these four, only Artaxerxes' decree qualifies to, in the words of Angel Gabriel, "restore and build Jerusalem". For example, Artaxerxes gives Ezra the power to restore judges and law enforcement in Jerusalem
Ezra 7:25-26 - And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not. [26] And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.
It is also evident from the prayer Ezra offered upon arriving in Jerusalem that he was to rebuild the city.
Ezra 9:9 - For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
Exactly what Gabriel had stated to Daniel:
Daniel 9:25 - ...the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
The other decrees and Nehemiah's commission do not qualify Gabriel's specification.
Okay so we know it to be Artaxerxes' decree. But how can we know this was given in 457 BC? The Bible will guide us here too:
Ezra 7:7 - And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.
This all, we are told, took place in the 7th yr of Artaxerxes. Go to google and type a question about when Artaxerxes began to reign. It will tell you 465 BC. Well isn't that 8 yrs to 457 BC? Yes, except that Artaxerxes' reign began between the 5th and 9th Jewish month. The 1st Jewish month corresponds to our April. This means that the 7th yr of Artaxerxes cannot begin earlier than our September 458 BC and would run all the way to our September 457 BC.
Ezra records when he got the decree and left for Jerusalem:
Ezra 7:8-9 - And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. [9] For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.
What is interesting is that this had taken place merely two months after Artaxerxes had married Esther as queen:
Esther 2:16 - So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
Yes, Ahasuerus is the same Artaxerxes in the book of Ezra. Remember Artaxerxes' reign runs from the 5th Jewish month (which is our September),...meaning that the Jewish year would end and begin before a yr of Artaxerxes' reign is complete. So in the tenth Jewish month of Artaxerxes' 7th yr (our January 457 BC) Artaxerxes made Esther queen of Persia, and after two months, he gave Ezra the decree to rebuild and restore Jerusalem (April 457 BC)...possibly because she found favor in his eyes., a favor that God used to move upon his heart and meet the prophetic declaration of Gabriel to Daniel.
Esther 2:17-18 - And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti. [18] Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
