As someone who still prefers to make games in a custom engine I wrote, the code is kind of an inseparable part of a game's character, decisions about engine structure and every little bit of code have ripples that can be felt in the end product, even if hard to pick out specifics

People are using Hades to hate on the New Castlevania now for some reason even though Jen Zee is an absolutely incredible artist and character designer who doesn't deserve this mass slander... Like, I wish her character designs were MORE influential actually.

"It doesn't feel like Castlevania" is bs because as someone who's actually played Castlevania, it does. And what Castlevania is "supposed" to be isn't even something that exists because the franchise has constantly changed what it could be. Igavania was different from OG trilogy, Lord of Shadows was different, Lament of Innocence was different, etc. There is no one way a Castlevania game SHOULD be.
