The Srbosjek (Serb-cutter) knife. A curved blade attached to a leather glove. Originally designed in Germany for agricultural use. Cutting vines. Harvesting crops. A simple farming tool. Croatian Ustaše imported thousands of them between 1941 and 1945. They found a different purpose: killing Serbs faster at Jasenovac concentration camp. This is the story of the only weapon in recorded history mass-produced specifically for ethnic genocide. Let me be clear about what this was. Germans designed this knife for farming. It had a curved blade fixed to a leather strap that you wore on your hand. Grape harvesters used it. Croatian Ustaše saw it and realized something else: one hand could grip a victim while the other cut their throat in a single motion. Fast. Efficient. They ordered thousands from Germany. Not for farming. For Jasenovac. No other nation in history has done this. No other people took a farming tool and imported it specifically to kill one ethnic group. This wasn't improvised. This wasn't wartime chaos. This was calculated. Industrial. A genocide planned so carefully they sourced the right tool for it. Jasenovac operated differently than German concentration camps. No gas chambers. No trains. The Ustaše preferred direct methods. They would line up Serbian prisoners. Men. Women. Children. One by one. Guards wearing the Srbosjek would work through the line. Conservative estimates put 50,000 to 80,000 Serbs killed this way at Jasenovac alone. Some historians place total camp deaths over 700,000. The Ustaše guards turned it into a competition. They would see who could kill the most Serbs in one night. They kept official records. They celebrated winners. Petar Brzica holds the documented record: 1,360 prisoners killed in a single night. They called him "King of the Cutthroats." He received a gold watch, a silver service set, and a roasted suckling pig as reward. This is not folklore. This is documented. Even the Germans were horrified. German officers stationed at Jasenovac sent reports back describing the Croatian methods as too brutal. These were Nazis. These were the people running Auschwitz. And they found what was happening at Jasenovac appalling. After the war, evidence got destroyed. Most Srbosjek knives were melted down or dumped into rivers. A few survive in Serbian museums today. Tito buried this history under "Brotherhood and Unity." Croatia was never held accountable. No trials. No justice. Most Ustaše leaders escaped to Argentina or were protected by Vatican ratlines. The West doesn't talk about Jasenovac the way they talk about other camps. You learn about Auschwitz in school. Jasenovac gets buried. The numbers get disputed. The entire genocide gets treated as a minor detail in a complicated Balkan conflict. This is deliberate. I'm writing this because these people deserve to be remembered. Not as numbers. Not as footnotes. As Serbs who died because they were Serbs. As victims of a genocide so calculated that the killers imported the right tool for it. Their memory is why we will never forget. Germany made the knife for farming. Croatia turned it into a weapon for genocide. The West buried the story. I intend to keep it alive. You can still purchase it online with it's official name, apparently it appears out of stock, I wonder who purchased them all.
