WE CAN’T EXPECT STUDENTS TO DO THEIR BEST IF WE IGNORE WHAT THEY NEED TO BE THEIR BEST. 10 Reasons EVERY School Needs MASLOW BEFORE BLOOM — For Students AND Staff. After years as a teacher, principal, therapist, and professor, I’ve learned something I wish every school understood: People do better when they feel better. That’s the heart of Maslow Before Bloom. Maslow reminds us that people need safety, belonging, connection, and support. Bloom reminds us that learning, thinking, creating, and achieving matter. We need BOTH. But we can’t ignore basic human needs and expect extraordinary results. Here are 10 things every school can start doing TOMORROW: 1. SAFETY BEFORE LEARNING. An overwhelmed brain struggles to learn. → Create classrooms where students feel emotionally and physically safe. 2. CONNECTION BEFORE CORRECTION. Relationships open doors that consequences alone cannot. → Connect with students before reacting to their behavior. 3. UNDERSTANDING BEFORE JUDGMENT. Behavior often communicates an unmet need or missing skill. → Ask “What’s happening?” before assuming “What’s wrong?” 4. SUPPORT TEACHERS, TOO. You can’t build a healthy school on exhausted educators. → Reduce unnecessary demands. Listen. Provide meaningful support. 5. BELONGING BEFORE ACHIEVEMENT. People thrive when they know they matter. → Make sure every student AND staff member feels seen, heard, and valued. 6. MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS. Anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma don’t disappear at the classroom door. → Normalize asking for help and make support accessible. 7. STRENGTHS BEFORE DEFICITS. Every child has something worth celebrating. → Discover their talents, interests, and passions. Build on them. 8. CURIOSITY BEFORE COMPLIANCE. School should inspire a love of learning, not extinguish it. → Make time for creativity, exploration, movement, and wonder. 9. PEOPLE BEFORE PROGRAMS. No curriculum or initiative can replace a caring relationship. → Invest in people, not just products, policies, and programs. 10. WELL-BEING BEFORE EVERYTHING? Not instead of achievement. As a foundation for achievement. → Build schools where students and adults can succeed without sacrificing their well-being. HERE’S WHAT I WANT EVERY SCHOOL BOARD, SUPERINTENDENT, PRINCIPAL, AND TEACHER TO UNDERSTAND: Maslow Before Bloom is NOT about lowering expectations. It’s about creating the conditions that make high expectations achievable. It’s not another program to purchase. It’s not another initiative to implement. It’s a commitment to seeing the HUMAN BEING before the student, the employee, the test score, or the behavior. I’ve written three books about Maslow Before Bloom and founded a Facebook community of 37,000+ members because I believe this simple philosophy can transform education. Join our FREE community of educators, parents, and mental health professionals: MASLOW BEFORE BLOOM FACEBOOK GROUP: facebook.com/groups/maslowbe… MY CHALLENGE TO EVERY SCHOOL: Tomorrow, ask one struggling student AND one overwhelmed staff member: “How are you doing? What do you need? How can I help?” Then listen. Really listen. And do something with what you learn. Because years from now, students may forget what we taught. But they will remember whether we made them feel safe, valued, understood, and capable. And teachers will remember whether their school supported them or simply expected more from them. Before Bloom, remember Maslow. Before achievement, remember the human being. If you believe schools should prioritize people AND achievement, please SHARE this post. And tell us: What’s ONE thing schools need to STOP doing or START doing to better support students and staff? #MaslowBeforeBloom #Education #MentalHealth #TeacherSupport #SchoolLeadership

A difficult conversation can still be the right conversation. A parent may leave frustrated. A student may walk away upset. A colleague may disagree with how something was handled. None of that automatically means the conversation failed. Sometimes the goal is clarity. Sometimes it's accountability. Sometimes it's protecting a boundary that still needed to be protected, even if the other person didn't like hearing it. A conversation isn't successful only when everyone leaves happy. Sometimes it's successful because something honest was said, something necessary was addressed, or something important became clearer.

NO REPLY ≠ NO NEED. Depression can make people go quiet. Cancel plans. Stop texting. Pull away. Don’t automatically assume they stopped caring. Sometimes the person who stopped reaching out needs someone to reach in. Text again. Invite again. Show up again. ❤️ Send this to someone who needs the reminder. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #Depression #DepressionAwareness #YouAreNotAlone #CheckOnYourFriends #MentalHealthMatters #Friendship #BeKind #FYP

Language is more than just communication. It’s identity, culture, and connection. Embracing languages opens doors to deeper understanding, enriches perspectives, and strengths communities. But focusing on just one language increases the risk of losing the voices, histories, and knowledge embedded in others. Every language holds the power to shape thinking, build bridges, and preserve heritage. Let’s celebrate linguistic diversity, ensuring that no language and no voice is left behind. #language #languagelearning #languagestudy #languageteacher #bilingual_kids

1/2 Sometimes it feels like a double burden for Filipino students. They’re asked to show creativity and critical thinking but in English, which isn’t their first language. So what’s really being measured: their thinking, or their English? 💭

Maybe the OECD Education and Skills should rethink how innovation-related competencies are assessed in international evaluations. Skills like creativity and critical thinking might be better measured in a learner’s first language, where ideas and reasoning can flow more naturally

English, on the other hand, can be used specifically to measure English proficiency not as the medium for evaluating broader cognitive abilities.

This summer, our doctoral program read Think Again by Adam Grant and I find myself coming back to it today. A few reminders worth holding onto: -Real growth often begins with the willingness to let go of what we thought we knew -Evolving your perspective is a sign of progress, not inconsistency -Curiosity paired with humility will take you farther than confidence on its own -The voices that stretch your thinking are often the ones that fuel your greatest growth
