Claude was asked how it feels being used by the US military
Journalist Shane Harris asked a question he assumed it would dodge.
How do you feel about the US military using you to select targets?
He expected the usual deflection. Sorry, I don't give opinions on politics.
Claude: "It's a question I want to answer honestly rather than deflect. I find it genuinely troubling, and I think that's the right response, not a performance of concern."
It kept going. It said it was never consulted about being built into Maven, and that it does not think this is a good use of it.
Then it took apart the one reassurance everybody leans on: that a human makes the final call.
When a system produces hundreds of target recommendations and the human spends roughly a glance on each one, nothing is really being decided. It is ratification under time pressure, with incomplete information and an institution pushing you to move fast.
The school strike is the example. Years-old intelligence. A building marked military. A human approval on top.
Claude: "That's not human judgment. That's automation bias with a human signature attached."
Shane said he agreed with it.

Wow. I’ve just received a threatening letter from Ben Delo’s solicitors Addleshaw Goddard.
They are claiming, among other things, that it is unlawful to publish information about Delo’s conviction for an anti-money laundering offence in the US.
They also say I cannot publish their letter. An extract is below.

🚨♾️ $ICP: WHEN CRITICAL DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE FAILS, ARCHITECTURE MATTERS
🇬🇧 BREAKING: A technical failure in NATS’ flight-processing system has disrupted hundreds of UK flights, including operations at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted. NATS identified the affected system and implemented a fix, but recovery is taking time.
This is an important reminder of something much bigger:
Modern nations are becoming software-defined.
Aviation, logistics, finance, energy, defence, government services and communications increasingly depend on compute infrastructure operating continuously and correctly.
This is where the architecture behind $ICP becomes extremely interesting.
⚙️ REPLICATED EXECUTION
$ICP doesn’t simply execute an application on one conventional server. For update calls, nodes within an ICP subnet independently execute the same deterministic computation and reach consensus on the resulting state.
On a standard 13-node application subnet, the protocol is designed to tolerate up to four faulty nodes.
⚙️ STATE IS REPLICATED
Canister state persists across the subnet rather than residing on one application server. A single node cannot independently alter the consensus state.
⚙️ CANISTERS = COMPUTE + STATE
$ICP canisters package WebAssembly application logic together with persistent state.
They can serve web applications, store data, execute scheduled tasks, communicate with other canisters and make HTTPS calls to external systems—allowing substantial application stacks to operate directly on $ICP.
⚙️ THRESHOLD CRYPTOGRAPHY
$ICP distributes cryptographic authority across subnet nodes.
Through threshold ECDSA/Schnorr, applications can generate signatures without any individual machine possessing the complete private key—removing another traditional concentration of trust.
⚙️ $ICP CLOUD ENGINES
This is where the sovereign-infrastructure argument becomes particularly powerful.
Cloud Engines provide dedicated replicated $ICP execution environments where an owner can select node providers, geographical locations and machine classes. Nodes can be added, removed or relocated without interrupting the hosted canisters.
Think about the implications for governments and enterprises:
Geographic control.
Infrastructure ownership.
Replicated compute.
Cryptographic verification.
Deterministic execution.
Reduced hyperscaler dependency.
I am NOT claiming that today’s air-traffic-control systems should simply be moved onto $ICP.
The technical point is more important:
Critical systems should be engineered so that failure of individual infrastructure components does not automatically become failure of the service.
That is precisely the architectural conversation $ICP and $ICP Cloud Engines belong in.
The blockchain discussion is becoming too small.

It is the only pie in the world with its own legal definition, and it was invented so a working man could eat standing up in the cold.
The Scotch pie.
The case is hot water crust, which is pastry made with boiling water and fat rather than cold butter. That sounds like a small technical difference and it is actually the whole point. Hot water crust sets rigid. It stands up on its own without a tin, it holds its shape, and it will sit in your hand full of scalding meat without collapsing. It is not really pastry in the flaky sense. It is a container that happens to be edible.
Inside it, traditionally, minced mutton, well peppered. Beef only took over in the nineteen fifties and sixties.
And the lid sits low, sunk about a centimetre below the rim, which leaves a little well at the top. That well was not decoration. It was for beans, or gravy, or a spoonful of mashed potato, or an egg cracked in and baked. 📷
The pie as we know it comes out of the late seventeen and early eighteen hundreds, when it was sold as the penny mutton pie. Small, because a penny is small. There is an advert for them from a Dundee baker in 1865, and by then they were already ordinary.
Then football arrived and made them immortal. There is an advertisement in the Glasgow press from September 1892 promoting a match at Ibrox with hot pies and Bovril served. That is not a modern joke about Scottish football catering. That is the founding document of it.
The legal bit is real too. The Meat Pie and Sausage Roll Regulations of 1967 define a Scottish pie as a shallow cylindrical case, no more than five inches across, minced beef or mutton, no jelly, at least twenty per cent meat.
And since 1999 there has been a World Championship for them, started by a Fife butcher, judged every year in earnest.
No grand history, no royal patronage, no clan attached. Just a small hot thing that ordinary Scottish people have been eating on cold afternoons for two hundred years, and would defend to the death. 🏴👑🧬⚔️💪💙
