To see whether my "Overreact" engine (overreactjs.github.io) is good enough, I've challenged myself to use it to build a full game, published to Steam, in the next 60 days! I'll update this thread with progress shots each day! 🧵 #gamedev #reactjs #javascript #indiegame #css

the anti-colonialism test: show them the contents of the British museum, mention artefact theft second, and watch the opinion flip in real time
the anti-AI test: show them the work first, mention AI second, and watch the opinion flip in real time

In other words, the end does not justify the means.

There’s a weird thing where the same generation that were wary of internet banking and online anything are now just asking Chat GPT to do their taxes and diagnose their medical ailments, while those of us who were excited about the early 2000’s internet are like “hold up…”

Another of my favourite scenes from Beep's Escape. And the function of this machine is one of my favourite puzzles in the game.

Sounds great! Does this mean we can expect you to stop spamming us with AI content?
The answer is to give the anti-Ai kids what they want. Split the internet, gaming, TV, movies, science, teaching, music and iphones into two separate economies. Ai is allowed on one platform and no Ai is allowed on the other. The anti-Ai kids can play in the tarpit and the rest of society can do what we're already doing.

Call me biased, but this is what I'll always support. No amount of AI will replicate the artistry and heart of animation.
"Wildwood" took nearly 15 years to make, with 231 puppets and 136 sets, making it the longest stop motion film ever made.

Are they though?
Every gamer I know actively working has told me this kind of story. Real gamers are thrilled at what Ai is going to do for the craft of games. Power of compute in the hands of real professional game designers will remove the influence of the terrible decisions made by corporate managers who don’t play games, hate the gaming audience and disrespect the art form.

Well, this blew up a bit! 🤣 I know, it's not exactly conclusive, as Steam has long had a better reputation, and Epic not so much. So if the poll about that, or about AI, who knows. But, there almost certainly is some cause and effect going on here.

As in, the poll aligns with the general sentiment we see in the responses to posts by strongly pro-AI folks, such as Doug and Tim.

When a car goes 25 mph nobody cares. That’s what it was designed to do. When a human being runs 25 mph, it’s an accomplishment because a HUMAN BEING achieved it. Nobody gives a shit if a machine spits out the code, art, and animations and creates a game. The reason games are successful comes from people experiencing the developer’s own vision. It’s not just about the product and the profit, it’s about seeing people’s ideas come to life through their own work. Here’s a hard-to-swallow pill for people who support AI: Having dreams and ideas is not actually impressive, everybody has them. It’s putting in the effort yourself to make them happen that makes it impressive, and if you think people will still appreciate that when you used an AI to do the hard work for you then you clearly don’t know what it means to truly create.

I underestimated how complex puzzle games can get, especially if you try to make the solutions non-linear, with multiple ways of reaching the same goal. Making sure items are available before they're needed, whilst also ensuring they fit the setting correctly. Ogre says "Phew!"

Fucking hell. What is wrong with people. If you can't think of 3 things that make your child special, you don't deserve to be a parent.

So, let me get this straight - #Anthropic lost FIVE TIMES what they earned in the first six months of the year, and yet the IPO is expected to make it the most valuable company in the world? Capitalism is broken, and #AI is not the correct answer.

Sometimes it's nice to just zoom out and appreciate the scale of the map in Beep's Escape! 74 hard-drawn screens, and likely to be 80+ for the extended edition.

"I spent a year working on my game, but because it has the AI label, no-one is buying it." 😭 Then presents game trailer that looks like incongruous garbage! It ain't the AI tag that's putting folks off fella! Anyway, here's some more from Beep's Escape (where no AI was used)

Trying out a trapdoor fade effect in Melkhior's Tower, for when a level is completed in time trial mode. The fade will help with a smooth transition to the result screen. bitglint.itch.io/melkhiors-t… #melkhiorstower #playdate #gamedev #indiedev #pixelart

I found a GIF of the animation. Color clash made this a real challenge, to keep the yellow center following a smooth arc.
