3 trends we noticed in working with over 300 students for #Match2026 this cycle:
1. A lot more stress over Step/Level 1 & 2 and more students doing poorly
2. Surge in dual applicants across all specialties
3. Wide mis-understanding of signal token system
Let’s dive deeper 👇
Asking residents thoughtful questions on interview day is a powerful way to convey interest & engagement in a program -
it's also gives you key insight for your rank list (that you wont get anywhere else)
Here are 5 key questions to ask residents during interviews this cycle 👉
Question #5: what kind of resident thrives here (and who struggles)?
This tells you whether the fit is real (and lets you connect YOUR strengths in after)
Self-driven learning vs curated learning
Academic/research oriented (or not)
Collegial environment vs more independent
We polled our team for the most unexpected & random/curveball residency interview questions they encountered during their interview trail.
Swipe for the questions we hope you never have to answer (and how we recommend approaching them if you do hear them this cycle)👉
5. Bizarre calculation type question, ie:
Number of gas stations in the country.
Number of beans in a jar on PDs desk.
etc, etc..
Another one gauging how you logic/think.
Less about accuracy, more about having sound method and reasoning.
Residency interview day can run 15 minutes or it can run 8 hours.
Depending on the specialty/program, you'll only know what you're walking into when the coordinator sends you the schedule (which can land the day before)
Here is what the day can looks like for 2027 applicants👉
The main question every interviewer is asking themselves:
Would I want to work a night shift with this person?
That feeling comes down to fit, communication, professionalism, and whether your reasons for wanting THIS program are compelling
Leaving that impression is trainable.
