It’s a business, and they sell protection. The $48,000 was paid for protection during that time frame. If no protection was needed, that fee was collected by those who backed your risk with millions. In other words, interest on the capital extended to you in case of a claim. You could have provided your own and paid yourself the fees, but you didn’t have, want to, or post the millions necessary to avoid insurance.

I pay $2,400 a year for car insurance. Over 20 years of driving, that’s $48,000. I’ve never been in an accident, never filed a single claim. That money just disappears into corporate profits.
Then I get into one minor fender bender, my repair costs $2,000, and they raise my monthly rate by $80 "due to market conditions."
THEN WHY IS IT CALLED "PROTECTION"?
I'm not trying to start a fight. I genuinely want someone to show me where the rest of that $48,000 went.

It’s there; you just don’t see the quick draw and load. In some states you can’t enter public places with loaded open carry, and some didn’t qualify for concealed carry. Some states require ammo and the gun kept separate in the vehicle while traveling. Know your place before advising others who may have different laws to abide by.
