“It was good playing in the A-League, but did I enjoy it? Probably not”. What it’s like dropping down EIGHT tiers from full-time pro 😲
He was once a teammate to Tim Cahill at Melbourne City, but this is why a league where you get “the s**t kicked out of you” helped Christian Cavallo - the brother of Josh - find his love of football again.
This is the quirky world of Victoria’s State League Two, where one of Australian football’s most ambitious projects - Berwick City - was born 👇

✍️ @MattyWindley: "We've been blown away by the response to our quest to document a Victoria State League 2 club's quest for A-League promotion...
"The club is the vehicle, sure. But Breaking Barriers is really about asking bigger questions.
"Not why shouldn’t Berwick City be in the A-League, but why shouldn’t a club like Berwick be allowed to dream of one day playing in the A-League?
"If a club does everything right, on and off the field, why shouldn’t there be a pathway?
"Not just for Berwick, but for South Melbourne, Sutherland Sharks, Yoogali SC – any club willing to put in the work.
"That’s the conversation. It’s not just 'Will they?' It’s 'Why can’t they?'"

1000% people will / should be talking about @SuthoSharks_FC and @aleaguemen expansion or A1/A2 in the years to come. They’re doing great things!
Shark Park would be an awesome A-League venue and Seymour Shaw is already a great training base + NPL setup.
Why is no one talking about Sutherland Sharks for A-League? Over 3,000 sold out today’s match!

You can't manufacture club tribalism.
Shifting the Aus pro pyramid to a "sporting merit first" approach (w/ sensible off-field licence standards) is LONG overdue.
Should have been central to 2019 reform and 2022 "unbundling".
Needs to be at forefront of next strategic cycle.

For many, Saturday night felt like it could be a landmark moment in unification of the game, but is that the way our football leaders view it?
Are they open to seeing a new way forward?

“The A-League could take a $15 million sugar hit… OR you could inject far more interest and dollars with a club like @smfc"
Some ask whether South Melbourne can afford to play in the A-League. @MattyWindley asks whether the A-League can afford NOT to have them.
