Interviewed the great Nick Love (director of The Football Factory, The Business) about the ecstasy of crime, being a Tory and getting old. And plans for Marching Powder 2: Stoned Island... For @spectator

My cover for this week's Spectator on the rise of screens in schools. Maths homework has more in common with video games than schoolwork. Schools won't give 4-year-olds physical books. Classrooms are war zones with all teacher time now spent on behaviour management.

I wrote about 25 years of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive here, and what it tells us about interpreting art, the human imagination and the creative work ethic. spectator.com/article/david-…

“A decade-long conversation about the novel’s form had taken place, and Vollmann had sat it out. Or, rather, the conversation had sat him out.” @MaxJeffery_ with an overview on A Table for Fortune as the cynosure around which WTV’s interests and projects orbit. 🔗⬇️

Scoop: Arron Banks directed private investigators to look into @Gabriel_Pogrund after his reporting on Farage’s finances
Exclusive: Prominent Reform member Arron Banks hired private investigators to look into Sunday Times journalist @Gabriel_Pogrund after his reporting on Nigel Farage’s finances. Banks is a multi-millionaire businessman, and was a major Ukip donor. He co-founded the Leave.EU pro-Brexit campaign and, in May 2025, he stood unsuccessfully as the Reform candidate in the West of England mayoral election. Last month, an investigation led by Pogrund, editor of the Sunday Times’s Insight team, revealed that Farage had been secretly funded by convicted criminal George Cottrell, known as “Posh George”. @emilylawford Read the full story here: newstatesman.com/politics/uk…

Everyone at the Spectator is devastated by the news that our beloved columnist and friend Rod has died. We knew that he had been unwell for some time but had been hoping for a recovery and return to the writing which Spectator readers loved and looked forward to every week. His voice, of course, is irreplaceable: a combination of bravery, originality, fearlessness and laugh-out-loud wit that we will miss deeply in the weeks and years to come. Tributes are already pouring in from contributors and friends, and we will be running many of them in the coming days. He was much loved and will be profoundly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. RIP.

Enjoyed writing the “This Ireland” feature in the magazine this week about my family, the GAA and the end of one of the most famous stories in Irish sports:

I wrote about why, despite Andy Burnham having an English degree, his style of politics is the most post-literate we’ve seen.
