Javi López just released the pilot episode of his new Backrooms horror series, Nemoris. And the numbers behind 17 minutes of footage are wild: 6 months of work 7,000+ generations 12 hours of generated video ~60 generations per 15 seconds used Around $20,000 in token costs Built mainly with Seedance 2.0/2.5, Nano Banana Pro and Seedream 5, all through Magnific.
Backrooms Nemoris S1E01: It Eats Light I've spent the last six months working in secret on this pilot episode for a new Backrooms canon. We premiered this week in Toronto and a it's now available on all platforms: a new Magnific Originals series! This is quite possibly the most complex project I've ever taken on in my life. Yep, even if that sounds like an exaggeration, it took even more effort than building the first version of Magnific Upscaler. I had never before tried to bring such a concrete, specific vision to the screen while pushing the current state of the art as far as possible. Every scene you see in this episode, every object, every movement of a character's hands, every space, every hum of the fluorescent lights... it's all there for a very specific reason, with absolute control and intention on my part. I never imagined that something that looks so simple on the surface could be so incredibly complicated. The script is my own, based on the original Backrooms concept (the iconic 4chan image) but developed to create an entirely new canon from scratch. In this first episode, I reveal barely more around 5% of the overall puzzle, so you may end up thinking: what the f*ck did I just watch? Or you may need multiple viewings to pick up on some extra clues, because several of them are genuinely hidden. The idea is to create a full 10 episode series, an anthology, and have you, the viewers, gradually piece together the puzzle yourselves as the clues are revealed. Beyond the video and image generations, I did all of the editing in DaVinci Resolve, with particular attention to the sound. I'd say around 60% of the time I spent on this project went into sound. In some scenes, there are more than 13 stereo tracks layered at the same time, using sounds I recorded myself or created and edited from generations and foley libraries. Every sound, every voice, and every gasp is designed to pull you into the world of the story and make you feel like you're actually there. That meant spending an enormous amount of time on sound design, thinking about things like the individual position of each sound in space, EQ, reverb to simulate different environments, the sense of immersion, etc. I've never learned so much about something so quickly. As for the generations, a few numbers: • 12 hours of total generated video for 17 minutes of final footage 🤯 • More than 7,000 generations in total. • An average of around 60 generations for every 15 seconds of final footage. • 6 months of work, including many weekends, with just one person behind the whole thing... I almost lost my mind. • Platform: Magnific, of course. Models: mainly Seedance 2.0 and 2.5 for video generations, and Nano Banana Pro and Seedream 5 for image references. • Approximately $20,000 in total token costs, not including the value of my own time. For the next episodes, I can't do this alone again or I'll go crazy. My plan is to put together a small team: voice actors, a colorist, 3D VFX artists, a sound designer, and, in general, people from the traditional film industry who can help us professionalize our pipeline and take this story to another level. If you're reading this and you think you might be interested, please leave a comment. Ah! If you have any technical questions about how this was made, I'd be happy to answer them. Feel free to ask me anything you like! Anyway, I'll leave you with the episode. For the love of everything holy: please watch it at home, relaxed, on a big screen, with a good sound system or a quality pair of headphones, the lights off, and some popcorn. And most importantly, enjoy. Nemus te reddat!

SEEDANCE 2.5 Prompt: CINEMATIC SETUP 30-second single continuous action sequence, 16:9. NO MUSIC — diegetic sound only. Stylized 2D/2.5D animated film, hand-painted cartoon look, strong clean silhouettes, expressive character design, simplified but detailed shapes, painterly shading, cinematic lighting, slightly exaggerated proportions, rich textures, epic fantasy atmosphere, polished feature-animation quality. Savage, brutal, heavyweight combat choreography with real weight and impact. Every cut and impact is rendered as thick bright crimson paint: painted gashes on skin, dripping streaks, splashes on sand and armor, brush-stroke style. CHARACTERS ARES: Greek god of war. Dark curly hair, short dark beard, scar on forehead, fierce scowl. Engraved bronze muscle cuirass, lion-head medallions on shoulder, belt and greaves, leather strip war skirt, torn crimson cape, sandals. Long bronze-tipped spear with red-wrapped grip, large round bronze shield with red lambda and lion head. TYR: Norse god of war. Long blond hair with two front braids, trimmed blond beard, blue eyes, blue war-paint stripe over left eye. Grey fur mantle, navy blue cloak with silver knotwork, dark tunic, leather belts with valknut pendant, steel vambrace, fur-trimmed leather boots. Knotwork-engraved longsword, round navy wooden shield with steel boss. Keep both faces, outfits, colors, weapons and proportions identical to the references in every frame. No weapon swaps except where described, no extra fighters. DAMAGE CONTINUITY (critical) Both fighters start clean and accumulate visible battle damage. Every wound, once received, stays clearly visible in all following shots and never heals, fades or disappears. Wounds are shown as open painted crimson gashes with paint running down skin and armor, growing messier as the fight goes on. Armor gets dented, cloth gets torn, sweat and dust build up. By the end both gods look battered and drenched in crimson paint. ARES wound list in order: 1) diagonal slash across left shoulder and upper arm, 2) cut above right eyebrow running down the cheek, 3) long gash across right thigh. TYR wound list in order: 1) deep rake across left ribs, tunic torn open, 2) split lip and crimson running into the beard, 3) slash across right forearm, 4) cut across the chest, fur mantle torn and stained. LOCATION : colossal marble coliseum of the gods above the clouds, giant statues of Olympian gods, crimson banners with golden sun emblems, burning braziers, golden sunburst mosaic at the center of the sand floor, temple of Olympus and waterfalls behind. Tens of thousands of spectators packed in the stands, late golden sunlight, drifting dust and embers. TIMELINE 0–4s: Fast circular orbit shot sweeping around the arena over the heads of the roaring crowd, fists in the air, banners shaking. Half the stands chant "LET'S GO ARES!", the other half answers "LET'S GO TYR!". The orbit spirals down toward the golden mosaic where Ares and Tyr stand face to face, ten steps apart, motionless, unharmed. 4–6s: Tight alternating close-ups: Ares' scowl, Tyr's cold blue stare. Ares slams spear against shield. Both charge at once, sand exploding under their feet. 6–10s: First clash. Ares drives a lightning spear thrust; Tyr parries it aside and ripostes with a horizontal slash; Ares blocks on the bronze shield, sparks bursting. Rapid exchange: thrust, parry, slash, block, shield against shield, shockwave of dust. Ground-level tracking camera. 10–14s: Tyr takes the initiative. Shield bash to Ares' chest, then a spinning slash opens a diagonal crimson gash across Ares' left shoulder — paint sprays across the frame and runs down his arm over the bronze bracer. Close-up on the fresh wound dripping. Ares touches it, looks at his red fingers, grins savagely. 14–18s: Ares answers. Low spear sweep, front kick denting the wooden shield, then the spear tip rakes Tyr's left ribs — tunic rips open, a wide crimson gash, paint splashing on the sand. Tyr grunts, traps the spear shaft under his arm and snaps it in two with a sword blow; the backswing cuts Ares above the right eyebrow, crimson running down his cheek into his beard. Whip-pan on the break. 18–22s: Savage close quarters, both visibly wounded and dripping. Ares fights with the broken spear half and the rim of his shield: the shield rim splits Tyr's lip, the spear half slashes Tyr's right forearm. Tyr's sword carves a long gash across Ares' right thigh; Tyr's shield splinters apart. Forehead clash. Blades lock, faces inches apart — extreme close-up: crimson streaked faces, paint dripping from chins, teeth bared, both roaring; the pressure cracks the golden mosaic, red drops falling onto the gold. Shaky close camera. 22–27s: Finale. Ares slashes across Tyr's chest, tearing the fur mantle, crimson arc in the air. Tyr roars and brings down a massive two-handed overhead strike. Ares meets it with a perfect shield parry — slow motion, ring of sparks, the longsword torn from Tyr's hands and spinning away. Ares leaps high, torn cape flaring, crimson trailing from his wounds, and comes down with the full weight of the bronze shield, driving Tyr into the ground. The mosaic shatters into a crater, huge burst of dust, stone shards and crimson paint in slow motion. 27–30s: Dust clears. Tyr lies defeated in the crater, all four wounds visible, exhausted. Ares stands over him, one foot on the broken Norse shield, chest heaving, shoulder, face and thigh wounds clearly visible and running with crimson paint, dented paint-smeared shield raised to the sky, unleashing a war cry. Low-angle hero shot pulling back as the entire coliseum erupts. Hold on Ares. End. SFX NO MUSIC. NO SCORE. NO SOUNDTRACK. NO BACKGROUND MUSIC OF ANY KIND. Only raw diegetic sound: thunderous crowd chants "LET'S GO ARES!" / "LET'S GO TYR!", heavy bronze and steel impacts, wet slicing hits, wood splintering, stone cracking, grunts of pain and war cries, deep physical thud on the final slam, crowd explosion at the end. QUALITY ANCHOR Consistent character design throughout, persistent wounds and damage in every shot, fluid feature-quality animation, clear readable choreography, strong silhouettes, real physical weight, no morphing, no wounds disappearing, no clean skin after being hit, no extra limbs, no duplicated characters, no text or subtitles on screen, no style shift to photorealism. NO MUSIC

EDIT SEGMENT Since I wasn’t completely happy with the result from around 23.7s to 30s, I decided to modify that section with the following prompt to make it a bit more epic. Prompt: Keep both characters, costumes, weapons and shrine identical to the surrounding footage; only the action, framing and intensity change. [23.7–24.5s] From the wide two-shot, hard whip-pan and crash-zoom into Kagutsuchi as he rises roaring, his skin splitting with molten cracks, and slams both fists into the ground: 業火 GOKA — a wall of fire detonates outward and swallows the frame. Camera shakes violently, embers hit the lens. [24.5–26s] Inside the inferno, low angle, medium-close on Susanoo. Fire raging around him, robe burning at the edges, eyes blazing electric blue. He raises Ame-no-Habakiri overhead: 天嵐 TENRAN — the sky above rips open into black storm, a wind blast tears the flames apart, lightning strikes the flagstones one after another in a ring around him, each bolt shaking the camera. [26–27.5s] Speed-ramp slow motion. Susanoo explodes forward wrapped in lightning, closing three meters in a single frame. Tight tracking shot on the blade as it comes down. Kagutsuchi raises a burning forearm to block — the bracer shatters, fire and lightning collide in a blinding white flash. [27.5–29s] Impact. Snap back to real speed. A colossal lightning bolt hammers Kagutsuchi straight down from the sky at the moment of the cut. He is driven backward across the plaza, ploughing a smoking trench through the flagstones, and smashes into the base of the main torii — the pillar cracks and the shimenawa rope snaps and falls. Stone lanterns topple. Rain returns instantly, hissing on his body. [29–30s] Low angle over Kagutsuchi's shoulder: he lies broken against the shattered torii, red kimono torn and smoking, molten cracks fading to dull ember, one fang broken, eyes dimming. Susanoo steps into frame in the foreground, silhouetted against lightning, blade lowered, breathing hard, rain streaming off his hair. Hold. Camera: handheld energy, constant micro-shake, no wide static shots — nothing further than a medium shot after 24s. Diegetic sound only: fire roar, thunder cracks, blade impact, stone shattering, rain.

MUSIC CREATED WITH SUNO Prompt: Dark cinematic Japanese battle score for Susanoo, god of storms, versus Kagutsuchi, god of fire. Ominous, powerful and dramatic rather than overly fast. Deep taiko drums, low orchestral strings, heavy brass, shakuhachi and subtle shamisen textures, combined with a haunting male choir and ancient ritual chants. Slow-burning tension that steadily grows into intense action, with heavy percussion, dark rhythmic pulses and massive orchestral swells. The music should feel mythological, sacred and dangerous, like two ancient gods clashing with overwhelming power. Strong contrast between tense atmospheric passages and powerful combat moments. Gradual crescendo throughout, becoming larger, darker and more dramatic, ending in a colossal orchestral and choral climax. Japanese folk influence, dark fantasy atmosphere, cinematic, epic

4/ That’s much closer to how I personally choose AI tools. I don’t really care which model is supposedly “the best overall.” I care about which one works best for the job I’m doing. So now I’m curious: Which AI model would YOU put at #1 right now and for what type of work? Check the full OpenArt Arena rankings: openart.ai/arena
