My book Autocrats vs Democrats came out a year ago today.
Since then, we've seen alarming setbacks for democracy, but also inspiring reminders of its resilience.
I'm more convinced than ever that democracy is worth fighting for.
For Americans, that fight must start at home.
In 2017 I gave a TEDx talk called, The Trump-Putin 'Bromance'.
It posed three questions: Why does Putin like Trump? Why does Trump like Putin? And how might their relationship shape US foreign policy?
Take a watch. What does / doesn't hold up?

Mr. Witkoff, Putin is not a "humanitarian."
A horrific Russian strike on the railway station in Dnipro. The Russians launched a drone attack on a platform where an ordinary commuter train and a scheduled passenger train were standing. Unfortunately, 13 people have been confirmed killed as of now. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Ten more people were injured. All necessary emergency services are working at the scene.
Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating? This is precisely why Ukraine has always said that just and decisive action by America and Europe is needed in response to Russian escalation – sanctions against Moscow and its war machine must not be eased for as long as this Russian war continues. It is time for new, stronger sanctions steps by the EU, the United States, and the G7. I thank everyone who is ready to help in this way.
After Putin's terrorist attack on a train station in Ukraine today, I am even more outraged that my president is siding with autocratic Russia and against democratic Ukraine. foreignaffairs.com/russia/pu… via @ForeignAffairs
Why is Trump on this side of this terrorist state, Russia?
Why arent more Republicans condemning this terrorist act and distancinng themselves from Trump's pro-Putin policy?
Replying to @EmmanuelMacron @ZelenskyyUa

I am watching leaders around the world condemn this horrific attack on the Dnipro train station.
Has Trump condemned it?
Just awful.

The Kremlin has spent years courting Donald Trump. Now they're seeing the payoff.
The United States of America is now helping Putin in his war against Ukraine.
I find that tragic.
The benefits to Americans of more democracy in the world should not be questioned.
But the means need improvement.
We need creative thinking about how to support freedom, human rights, and democracy more effectively.

I look forward to the day when a new AI startup will automate and streamline the submission process (not the writing) for ALL letters of recommendation.
So tragic that the daughter of Nkrumah doesn’t seem to understand that Ukrainians are fighting for their independence from an empire in exactly the same way that her dad fought for independence for Ghana from another European empire.
Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana’s First President, Kwame Nkrumah, attends the Russia-Africa media summit in Moscow together with other descendants of African liberation leaders:
“The Russians helped us during our long and sometimes violent independence struggle all over the continent.
So there is some goodwill there which we hope we can capitalize on to do more for our future in Africa.”
I do too. Stay strong Felix.

"A dangerous fatalism is settling in about America’s place in the world. ... After Trump won a second time, however, a new conventional wisdom settled in: Trumpism represents America’s new and enduring approach to international politics. Trump is not the cause, but a symptom of deeper structural trends in American society, so the argument goes.
This analysis is flawed."

The root cause of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is Putin.
Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 without being provoked and without any threat to Russia from Ukraine or NATO.
Trump's Foreign Policy Doesn’t Have to Be America’s New Normal
On Iran, alliances, trade, Ukraine, and democracy, the polls tell a consistent story: Trump is out of step with the American public.
