The disturbing discovery of five young orangutans abandoned in an Odisha forest has exposed a horrifying international smuggling operation.
Native only to Borneo and Sumatra, these critically endangered babies were likely dumped by traffickers near the West Bengal border after being smuggled into India for the exotic pet trade.
Experts say that because mother orangutans fiercely protect their young, they were almost certainly killed so these babies could be stolen.
Update: Five baby orangutans, rescued from Balasore forest, brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar. The infants will be hand-reared at the Centre for Rearing Animal Babies in the Zoo: NZP officials.
