This Week In GSL History 2016 10 Years Ago Mead WR #23 Lucas Bacon was due for a big game and it came in the 19th playing of the Battle of the Bell: Mead 35, Mt. Spokane 12. 7,454 fans at Joe Albi Stadium watched Bacon go on to catch 4-TD passes (66, 5, 5 and 71 yards) as he racked up 5 catches for 164yds in the game. His fellow WR #9 Thomas Dammarel also had 6 catches for 134yds. Panther QB Payton Loucks was 24-of-33 for 364yds & 5-TDs.

This Week In GSL History 1976 50 Years Ago University, after falling behind twice by 10 point deficits, leaned on their QB in a 41-32 win over Shadle Park. Titan QB #14 Dan Daly tossed 5-TD passes to four different receivers in the comeback win. In all, Daly was 11-of-16 for 196 yds passing. Brad Stocker led Shadle with with 143 yards and 2-TD's

This Week In GSL History 2016 10 Years Ago Shadle Park had all three phases clicking on offense while the defense pitched a shutout in an 18-0 victory over University at Joe Albi Stadium. The Highlanders were led by an offensive trio that each surpassed the century mark. Running back #33 Xavier Wicks rushed for 114 yards and 1-TD, quarterback #2 Carson Doyle threw for 233 yards and 2-TD’s, and wide receiver #84 Vinny Epefanio hauled in three passes for 114 yards and a TD.

This Week In GSL History 1986 40 Years Ago 9,000 fans at Joe Albi watched Gonzaga Prep go 7-for-7. The G-Prep offense scored on their first 7 possessions as they quickly dispelled highly regarded Mead 45-0. Both teams came into the highly anticipated game undefeated, but it was Bullpup QB #10 Ron Hawkins & RB #27 Tom Corbett who quickly let the Panthers know they were the better squad. In the 1st Qtr, Hawkins rushed for 106 yds and 2-TD's as the wishbone attack was firing. He finished the game with 3-TD's and 111yds rushing. Corbett finished with 119yds and 2-TD's.

This Week In GSL History 2006 20 Years Ago The back-and-forth battle between Mead and visiting Coeur d’Alene had a little bit of everything. In the end, it was the Vikings who rallied in the 4th quarter to upend the Panthers, 42–28. Cd'A QB Shea Vucinich threw for 173 yards, completing 12 of 30 passes, and tossed 4 touchdowns. Mead was led by a powerful rushing attack. Chris Jones carried 21 times for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Luke Hattrup added 111 yards on 19 carries and scored twice. A wild one from start to finish, but the Vikings made the plays when it mattered most.

This Week In GSL History 1966 60 Years Ago Big Games from two multi-purpose backs in wins. Shadle Park’s #10 Steve Ogilvie scored the game-winning TD with 1:57 left to go along with his 53yd TD interception return & his 2nd Qtr safety of LC’s running back. Rogers’ #43 Dick Olsen rushed 11 times for 141yds (12.8 avg), scored 3 TD’s, & had an interception in a win over Ferris.

This Week in GSL History 2006 20 Years Ago Big Night's for two GSL All-Leaguers University's running back #30 Tyler Carlson rushed 33 times for 185yds & 2-TD's in a 24-7 win over Shadle Park. Ferris' wide receiver #84 Jared Karstetter caught 9 balls for 126yds & 2-TD's in a 24-17 OT win over East Valley.

This Week In GSL History 1986 40 Years Ago Lewis & Clark used the running of senior #27 Russ Anthony and its nasty defense to defeat Shadle Park in the league opener 26-0 at Joe Albi Stadium. The Tigers Anthony rushed 12 times for 115 yards (9.58 avg) and scored 2 touchdowns including his 47 yard score on a 4th & 1. The stingy LC defense held the Highlander offense to just 61 total yards and Brandon Vincent put the finishing touch on the shutout, intercepting a pass and racing 58 yards for a pick-6 score.

This Week In GSL History 1985 40 Years Ago AAA State Semifinal In their biggest game of the season, what does a respected wishbone triple-option offense like Gonzaga Prep do in the snow? Turn to the air, of course. The Bullpups did exactly that in a 28–21 victory over South Kitsap at Joe Albi Stadium. The Wolves from Port Orchard, led by Spokane native and Shadle Park alum Ed Fisher, took a 21–14 lead into halftime after their defensive front & linebackers came out firing, slowing down the G-Prep rushing attack. But sparked by 4 forced fumbles, the Bullpup defense shutout South Kitsap in the 2nd half and leaned on their passing game to score the final 21 points to complete the comeback.   #81 Jason Pulliam hauled in 2 of those 3 touchdown passes, including the leaping game-winner with 2:41 remaining in the 4th. Pulliam finished with 4 catches for 105 yards, making several difficult grabs in the snow, but none bigger than his athletic 33-yard leap, spin, and score on a halfback pass from Tom Corbett. In the game, Prep’s offensive breakdown was: 150 yards passing and 146 rushing as they outgained the Wolves 296 to 285.   On a slick astroturf surface like Albi, where footing was uncertain, kicker Thayne Doyle calmly converted all 4 extra-point attempts.
