(Don’t mind the spiderwebs. They’re outside. I think the spiders are knitting a protective shield for my whole house because they know I’m sad & scared & infuriated.)

The summer I was 12, I got Bastard Out of Carolina from my public library (the librarian raised her eyebrows, but said nothing) & read the whole book bathed in sun & popsicle drippings on my front porch. I didn’t understand it entirely, but loved it. RIP Dorothy Allison.
