RE Fun Fact Friday #121
Starting at age 5, the Eckzahn Union mandates boys go to compulsory summer training called “Vedtjad” which takes place during the summer months. This is a core part of Eckzahn education along with regular school. Education is year round, happening in stages. Vedtjad, just like school, shifts curriculum as attendees age, focusing on more mature skills as they age.
Vedtjad often has dedicated locations, typically on the outskirts of towns, or deep in the wilderness. Unlike school, kids are expected to stay at the facility the entire duration, only going home for a short break in the middle. The Eckzahn school year depends specifically on the planet, the year duration, climate, urbaness, etc. The Eckzahn school year is also modeled after, Vedtjad being part of it. They have a year round model, with more smaller breaks in between terms instead of less larger breaks. Vedtjad is typically held during the summer months, where kids go to specially built Vedtjad facilities. These facilities have all the things needed to care for the students and staff, who all stay in dorms together. Modeled after military barracks, kids are grouped up and stuck in a room with 3-5 others. The staff provide any food or other necessities they might need.
Vedtjad facilities are almost exclusively staffed by men, while normal Eckzahn schools are typically only staffed by women. Veterans are given priority to serve as “Forstje” or “supervisor/counsoler” at Vedtjads. Often as a way to pass down their knowledge and experience while also serving as a way to integrate back into society, while also giving them a continued way to serve their nation. They are picked to be the person the kids can aspire to be.
During their time at the Vedtjad kids are taught a wide range of things appropriate for their age. Unlike typical school curriculum, these lessons are often taught through experience and physical activity. They are taught discipline, loyalty, and resourcefulness. Younger kids might get taught how to work as a team through team sports, or learn proper manners.
They are taught to respect authority and experience. They will also do physical activities and plyometrics to build a starting point for them. They will also be taught wrestling and other martial skills, to introduce them how to defend themselves, and properly solve arguments. They are taught how to fight what is and is not an honorable fight, and what should be fought over and what should be differed. They teach them how to solve problems by doing games and activities. Solo and group vocal lessons are taught, not just to sound nice, but to build cohesion and practice working as a singe unit. There is no strict program or curriculum however, while there are some activities and lessons that are mandatory, kids specifically at younger ages are allowed to choose certain activities and lessons they want to participate in. On top of that, there is much free time allotted every day, to let the kids be kids.
The Vedtjad counselors are advised to give special attention to the poorest performers. There are more than enough assigned to any group so that special attention can be given to any kid that needs it. Counselors stay with a group of kids throughout the years, to help build the connection between them. And to encourage building connections that will last past the end of attendance.
As the kids get older, they will learn more practical and technical skills. Instead of learning things through games and activities, they are slowly introduced to more real tasks and problems. They might be tasked with finding and resolving an issue with a vehicle, or an electrical issue. Instead of driving competition through team games, they are timed or judged against their peers. However they are not totally judged based on other kids, the best scores are given to the kids who improve the most, not the best performer. They are taught survival skills, how to hunt, cook, prepare food, shelter building, the whole 9 yards.
Older kids are given more rigorous lessons and responsibilities. There is much more physical training including, but not limited to extensive long distance running, strength training, and advanced movement techniques. They are taught military drills, discipline, and mindset with the skills that mindset requires. They are expected to be in great physical shape, and are taught to stay that way with lessons in nutrition. They are taught how to disassemble, clean, and operate weapons including small arms and crew operated weapons. They are taught lessons in small unit tactics, sapping, ambushing, and other small scale tactics. They are taught how the military works, what they do and how it is important to their society.
Curriculum often specializes depending on where the Vedtjad is located, farming communities will introduce farming skills like maintaining automated combines and other vehicles, while more urban communities might focus on more specialized engineering and technical skills.
The goal of Vedtjad is to equip boys with all the skills he will need for adulthood. Prioritizing resourcefulness, but also comradery in a shared goal through mutual experiences. These connections and shared experiences allow for every Eckzahn man to relate to each other to build a more cohesive culture and society that values the same things. Of course this goal has changed over time, with the new (in relative terms) LEVg pan-canine ideology, many Vedtjads are now including many lessons to reinforce this way of thinking to the kids.
At 16, the same time kids graduate secondary school they graduate Vedtjad as well. At this point they can choose secondary education, military service, or local apprenticeship or colonial specialties.
