Big Tech has largely deferred to Trump since his election. But as Democrats appear poised to regain power in the midterms, Google, Meta & others are taking new tacks with ICE subpoenas seeking user information

No mention of Meta in the S-1…
Anthropic only directly names two competitors in its S-1. 👀
1️⃣ Alphabet $GOOG
2️⃣ OpenAI
"We compete directly with companies developing frontier models for third-party software developers and enterprises. Our primary competitors in this category include Alphabet Inc. (together with its affiliates, “Google”) and OpenAI Group PBC (“OpenAI”)."
Wrote the @WSJ tech newsletter this week about Meta’s unending AI spending

New: The three researchers OpenAI fired last month spent the summer fighting to keep AI's chain-of-thought process visible.
Then, OpenAI asked to see their Signal chats. A week later, they were let go.

New: Meta is creating a new stock class to help fund its AI spending spree

Among the many details in this great @anissagardizy8 scoop, Dario and Daniela Amodei each only made a $655,000 base salary in 2025. Though their stock and option awards got them to $18 million and $16.5 million in total comp, respectively

SCOOP: Anthropic's latest draft S-1 documents show financials results for the first half of the year, gigantic spending plans for the future, and a laundry list of risk factors.
- Anthropic recorded a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of the year, tied to accounting adjustments related to previous financings
- Anthropic is set to spend >$600 billion on compute in the coming years, inclusive of cloud agreements and chip leases.
More in @WSJ:
Completely unrelated to the Elizabeth Holmes resurgence of the moment, I recently bought this black long sleeve turtleneck-esque shirt from FP Movement that I adore and have been wearing constantly so much so that I wore it to a YCSE screening this weekend without even realizing
for any woodward fans, this is a fascinating story

Katie Zacharia was in her office with the @WSJ when Jason Miller knocked on the door.
“JD wanted to chat with us real quick."
Outside Trump was telling reporters he asked her to reconsider the role.
She never returned to the interview, or the job.

Marc Andreessen has a complicated relationship with his hometown, but I discovered another (touching) side of his childhood that has never been told:

Meta today released a new open-weight AI model that can run locally on Apple's high-end Mac computers.
It's a big deal that the two companies are collabing after their long feud, during which Mark Zuckerberg in 2018 said he wanted to "inflict pain" on Apple. (1/2)
It's also a mutually beneficial deal. Meta gets more researchers and developers to use its AI model and Apple gets to sell more Macs.
