In 2007 the head of EDF promised that we'd be “cooking our Christmas turkeys” with electricity from Hinkley Point C in 2017. By 2021 it was going to be Christmas this year. Now it's 2031. Nuclear is not the solution
Spirit of Adventure leaving Greenwich today. Police came scurrying down to river when they heard enormous foghorns as she left. Biggest ship that comes this far up river 60K tonnage as opposed to 50K Vikings.
Slight tweak - current PM plus any who were PM for more than 5 years. Don't need the last ex PM. Current system turns what should be a solemn moment into a parade of incompetents & a reminder that while Thatcher was in power for 11 years we've had 7 in the last 11
In today’s Times the mighty Max Hastings makes the argument for scrapping the tradition of former PMs laying wreaths at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.
There will be 9 this year.
At the least any ex PM should have served 5 years plus the most recent ex PM.
That would mean Major, Blair, Cameron & Starmer at this years ceremony.
Stop whingeing about dark evenings now clocks have gone back. Even on Dec 21 when Sun rises after 8 & sets before 4 in London you get nearly 8 hours of daylight (7 in Aberdeen). The sun rose (briefly) yesterday in Longyearbyen but it won't rise today - in fact not till February 9
To my surprise youtube version of Expresso podcast for 15th anniversary of Jimmy Savile's death (29 Oct) has had 200K+ views. Most important claim I make is Ian Trethowan who became Director General must have known of concerns about Savile in the '70s

20 years ago Trafigura dumped toxic waste illegally in Ivory Coast. Many became ill & Trafigura agreed to compensate families of dozen+ people who died. Traf sequence starts 55.45 in new doc in German (but English subtitles). There's a lot of me in it

15 years after Jimmy Savile died 29/10/2011 the Daily Express podcast asked me what happened next and how much BBC knew. I told them I believed that since ‘70s that knowledge went to the very top

Many of the Royal Navy's problem go back to Gordon Brown's decision to build two completely unnecessary aircraft carriers rather than frigates & destroyers. With 24 F35Bs on board they make tempting targets. The ship would cost £5 Billion to replace and the planes £2.5 Billion
ex-HMS Iron Duke towed out of Devonport to be prepared for scrapping in Portsmouth today.
As we previously reported, £103M was spent on her 49-month LIFEX refit for about 16 months of operational availability before it was decided she was unseaworthy and beyond economical repair. Another £4.7M was spent on a project to add Towed Array sonar before it was cancelled.

This is the first morning that's felt unequivocally Autumnal to me. Dark & wet & gloomy. In for the long slog till late March or April. Count your blessings you're not living in Spitzbergen. In Longyearbyen the sun sets in a week's time and doesn't rise again till February 15th
I'm trying to think of examples of most useless leaderships in history of the World - General Gamelin of the French army in May 1940, Titanic Captain Edward Smith, Liz Truss perhaps, whoever's running Tottenham Hotspur - but no - the Welsh Rugby Union always takes the biscuit
Any chance to trot out Mark Twain line "Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated" (Ed - he actually said "The report of my death was an exaggeration") Fab @peltonarms (just named as Secret London Top 10 pub) has famous black cat called Penny who has just returned from the dead
Climate change is forcing - yes forcing - good Afghan men to sell their daughters to other good Afghan men - who want to have sex with children
Every suicide is a tragedy. This is really good thread. I didn't know standard of proof at inquest lowered from beyond reasonable doubt to balance of probabilities in 2018 resulting in 11% rise in statistics but not suicides. Also interesting that men born in 1970s at higher risk
Good work, James Oliver, @rorytinman, Simon Lock, BBC & TBIJ exposing @Deloitte. 9/10 financial scandals the accountants are at the heart of it

I think BBC saying "keen not to be overly reliant on existing Dr Who lore" means no Daleks or Cybermen in first series of reboot if Dr Who comes back. Hat Trick Mercurio? Vicky McClure as 16th Doctor?
NEW: Production companies who've submitted bids to produce #DoctorWho for the BBC under the broadcaster's tender process revealed. More details:

If you celebrated October 7 I hope you now realise you were wrong. Nova festival massacre & kidnappings not just evil but stupid. Tragedy for the Jews was bound to result in tragedy for Palestinian people & destruction of much of Gaza. You couldn't predict scale of war crimes
~Netanyahu & IDF would commit but you could predict IDF would continue until Hamas destroyed as military force, they would kill more than 10K Palestinian civilians & Israel would impose security zones inside borders halving size of Gaza to physically prevent any further attack.
