🌎 Crises cross borders, but their costs are borne unequally. Following the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, we examine why fiscal adjustment is no answer to today’s shocks and crises, and what needs to change in the global financial architecture.

⏰What does your country pay for debt servicing in the 12-month budget?
When billions are channelled into debt interest while healthcare and education remain underfunded, the consequences don't stop at the treasury. They enter our homes. They shape whether a woman can access maternal healthcare, whether a girl can stay in school, whether a family can afford treatment, and how many unpaid hours women must work to fill the gaps left by failing public services.
This is how macroeconomic decisions become intimate, everyday struggles.
Egypt currently holds the biggest debt burden on the African continent. This debt burden reminds us that economic policies are never gender-neutral. When public resources are squeezed, the costs often fall on those already carrying the heaviest burdens.
We demand more than balanced budgets. We demand economies that sustain life.

🛑💸 Policies that ignore humanity are injustice dressed as language.
GDP is rising. Mines are producing. Farms are harvesting. Governments are collecting revenue. But for the workers and communities creating this wealth, food, housing, healthcare and education remain out of reach. When economic growth doesn't translate into dignified lives, who is it really serving?
IMF and World Bank-backed economic policies cannot keep celebrating growth while people struggle to survive. An economy that enriches a few while abandoning the many is not progress. It's inequality dressed up as success.

As part of our #OurLivesNotBudgetItems campaign, we continue to reiterate that countries may borrow. Governments may sign agreements. Institutions may negotiate. But people pay. And they pay through reduced public services, insecure work, less food, conflict, unpaid care, and fewer opportunities to live in dignity.
In ActionAid‘s recent report, Still Cooking with a Failed Recipe, advice from institutions such as the IMF and World Bank that continue to shape economic policies directly affecting women’s lives continues to be centered around austerity, regressive taxation, wage-bill cuts and the sheer underinvestment in public services. This reveals the true role of these institutions: debt enforcers and pleasers of creditors, rather than promoters of human life and preservers of the shared planet.
As African feminist Macroeconomists, our position is clear. The current economic system is a symptom of a deeper sickness: a system built on extraction, exploitation, colonialism, neo-colonialism, and patriarchy. Policies must reflect the lived realities, not boardroom fantasies. Listen to the people!

As the IMF and World Bank gather for their 2026 #AnnualMeetings in Bangkok, we are bringing the realities behind their economic policies to the centre of the conversation. For more than 80 years, the IMF and World Bank have shaped economic policies that determine who has access to healthcare, education, decent work, food, public services and care, and who bears the cost when these systems are cut.
Economics does not operate in an abstract space. It determines who gets medication, who gets education, whose knowledge is superior, whose work gets paid, who gets to have credits over another’s livelihood, and whose social relations become the norm.
Through our campaign themed “Our Realities and Lives Are Not Your Budget Item,” we hope to bring together our feminist thought that has been challenging the continued use of austerity, debt conditionalities, wage-bill cuts and underinvestment in public services. As feminists, we are here to reiterate that our lives are not your budget item.
✡️Why now? 80+ years of failed economic policies with the "Grandmother’s IMF" is still cooking with the same failed recipe.
✡️Our power: Collective feminist action creates change and demands a feminist reset.
✡️Our role: Every action, big or small, contributes to the movement and the court of history.

🏥 It’s raiding health & education budgets to make repayments
❌ It’s austerity measures forcing up the cost of living

The current global tax architecture has profound implications for gender and global inequality, shaping how taxing rights and revenues are distributed across countries. Developing countries, particularly in Africa, often generate substantial value through natural resources, labor and markets, yet retain limited taxing rights over resulting revenues. This constrains public investment and can deepen gender and social inequalities.
Join us for a session during the #AnnualMeetings in Bangkok, Thailand titled: "Addressing Global Inequality through Fair Taxing Rights: The Case for a Progressive UN Tax Convention".
This session will explore how a progressive UN Tax Convention could rebalance taxing rights, strengthen source-country taxation, including in the digital economy, and advance tax justice.
