When I got locked up in prison, the first four cell mates I had, had obvious ADHD, hadn't attended school much, and could barely read and write.
Within six months of being in prison, I was helping at least ten people to write home because they had difficulty reading and writing.

Humans are social creatures. Throughout history, we had to cooperate in order to survive and propagate our species. Empathy and self-sacrifice are a part of our biological evolution. When we see someone else suffering, the mirror neurons in our brain are activated and we feel a similar discomfort. Rules such as 'do no harm,' 'share,' and 'help one another,' which are brought about by living in a community, existed as survival strategies long before religions became institutionalized.
