An enormous cell of rising air — perhaps of record magnitude — will shift east across the Pacific during the second half of November. As this MJO pulse reinforces El Niño, it will likely help trigger a transition to stormy weather across the central and eastern United States.

A big takeaway is that 17.5 percent of the planet experienced total rainfall that was in the top 10 percent of historical observations during October. The extra moisture alone didn't cause this, but it tilted the odds toward heavier bursts of rain that can lead to flooding.

El Niño's footprint of elevated moisture really stands out — from the Pacific to South America — as does a blob of increased moisture stretching into the contiguous United States. That blob was probably contributed to by a Kelvin wave that traversed the west coast of North America during October, leading to record ocean heat and atmospheric moisture in some areas from Mexico to California — a direct consequence of El Niño. On the flip side, it was exceptionally dry across a stretch from Indonesia to Papua New Guinea, Fiji and French Polynesia, also because of El Niño. In the Atlantic Ocean, much warmer than average waters boosted moisture levels across Florida.

The planet just experienced its moistest October on record, beating the previous record from 2023 by 2.3 percent — and exceeding the 1991-2020 average by 7.2 percent. This extra moisture in the atmosphere can be harnessed by storms, loading the dice toward more extreme rainfall events, like the devastating ones that have dotted the U.S. in recent weeks. October marked the third consecutive month that a new moisture record was set, a streak that will probably continue into 2027 because of a record El Niño stacked on top of a warming climate. Expect a higher frequency of extreme rainfall events in the months ahead. It's probably going to get more intense.

New ECMWF data shows the *strongest subtropical jet stream* in its forecast history blowing across the Pacific and U.S. this winter into next spring, with record-strength winds predicted from California to Florida. There's even a connection to Europe. El Niño fuels more thunderstorms near the equator, which release heat high into the atmosphere. That extra warmth strengthens the Hadley circulation and steepens the temperature gradient between the tropics and the mid-latitudes, which strengthens the subtropical jet. And that's why such a stormy winter is anticipated across the western, southern and eastern United States.
