STARTING SOON At 1 PM CST on Sunday, October 11th, the Methexis Institute Forbidden Books reading group will discuss Thomas Crean and Alan Fimister's book 'Integralism: A Manual of Political Philosophy' (2020). Integralism is a political theory asserting that the Catholic faith should fully inform civil law and public policy. It rejects the strict separation of church and state, arguing instead that temporal political authorities must recognize the supernatural end of the human person and subordinate themselves to the spiritual authority of the Catholic Church. Positioning politics as the highest branch of moral philosophy, Crean and Alan Fimister argue that human society cannot be fully understood or guided apart from divine revelation. Because humanity's ultimate end is supernatural beatitude, temporal authority and civil governance must ultimately be directed toward spiritual salvation through the teachings of the Catholic Church.  Crean and Alan Fimister present a systematic defense of traditional Catholic political philosophy, emphasizing that earthly commonwealths achieve their true perfection only when subordinated to the divine order. Please, if you can, read as much as possible of this book, with a special focus on the Introduction, and chapters 1-2, 11-12. authortomharper.com/wp-conte… As ever, it is not required to read in advance to attend this group. At 1 PM CST on Sunday, 4th October, the Methexis Institute Forbidden Books reading group will discuss the debate between Alexandre Kojève and Leo Strauss contained in the book On Tyranny (1963). Born in Russia, Kojève revived Hegelianism in France, arguing history had ended, before serving as an influential European bureaucrat. Strauss, a German-Jewish émigré, fled to America and revived classical political philosophy at the University of Chicago. Despite radical disagreements over tyranny and the role of philosophy, they maintained a profound intellectual friendship that profoundly challenged the entire core trajectory of Western political philosophy.   In this debate, Strauss defends the classical view, arguing that philosophy and politics must remain strictly separate. He contends that the philosopher’s pursuit of eternal, immutable truths requires detachment from political power. For Strauss, modern tyranny fueled by the desire to implement global ideologies threatens the very existence of independent philosophical thought. As a Hegelian-Marxist alternative, Kojève argues that truth is realized through historical action. He claims the philosopher must actively engage with politics to guide the tyrant toward a rational, "universal and homogeneous state" where all individuals achieve mutual recognition. What the Ancients dismissed as a utopian impossibility, Kojève views as the inevitable, progressive "end of history". Please, if you can, read as much as possible of the second part of this book, beginning with Kojève's essay "Tyranny and Wisdom" and continuing with Strauss's essay "Restatement: On Xenophon's Hiero". drive.google.com/file/d/1e3h… As ever, it is not required to read in advance to attend this group. Last May, I gave a short (9 minute) introduction to Richard of St. Victor's "On the Trinity" (De Trinitate), which I regard as perhaps the most daringly speculative work of Medieval Latin trinitarian ontology. @NTOntologies @TRIERTIUM The video of this introduction can now be viewed here: youtu.be/Uua4nU2vkjA
