Sam Reinhart ran the show in the Panthers' win over the Blackhawks: a 9.8 Game Grade on two assists and an 11-2 edge in chances from in close with him on the ice. Sandis Vilmanis (9.5) and the Kings' Adrian Kempe (9.0) also shone. Every player, every game, graded.
Carolina owns the East's best record at 12-3 and has generated 3.9 expected goals a night over its last ten, a pace that makes its flat night in Nashville look like an outlier. New York needs a disciplined game to protect its wild-card spot.
Tampa Bay has yet to lose at home, and Chicago has yet to win on the road. Something gives Thursday night, and the Blackhawks will need to keep it close to have a chance.
Detroit has out-chanced Vegas over the last ten games, generating 3.4 expected goals per game while allowing 3.0, a real edge for a team fighting to climb out of the wild-card pack. Gibson's status in net is the question that could decide whether that edge shows up on the scoreboard tonight.
Philadelphia keeps running into a wall at the Garden, and Dylan Garand is the reason the crease feels so hard to crack. The Rangers have been a different team at home, and the Flyers have yet to find a way through it.
Dallas has averaged 3.2 expected goals per game over its last 10 while allowing 2.7, and the Blue Jackets are counting on Nationwide Arena to tip a rematch with a club that beat them last week.
Adrian Kempe scored a hat trick and added an assist on just four shots, while his season shooting rate sits at 13.3 percent. The Kings pulled away from a San Jose club that has now lost three straight.
Over their last ten games these two have been near mirror images, and the gap comes down to the building. Colorado is in its comfort zone in Denver, while Nashville arrives on a two-game streak looking to close the distance in the wild-card race.
Over their last 10 games, the Devils have averaged 4.0 expected goals per night while allowing 2.4, and it is not close. St. Louis is clinging to a wild-card spot on a road trip that has gone poorly, and Newark is where that gap shows up.
The Penguins make plenty of chances but hand nearly as many back, and it shows in a 5-8-2 record. Their home barn has been kind, though, and a two-game skid is the kind of thing a team can snap at home against Swayman and the Bruins.
Anaheim has given up 3.9 expected goals a night over its last 10, nearly four goals' worth of quality every game. Edmonton is first in the West and already beat the Ducks once. Anaheim generates chances, but it keeps handing over better ones.
Celebrini's power-play goal was about the only thing that went right for San Jose, which fired five shots and logged a team-high 22:40 of ice time in a 7-2 loss. The Kings pulled away from there.
Los Angeles took the better looks, not the most of them, and Kuemper turned away every dangerous chance San Jose created. Kempe and Panarin did the real damage in a 7-2 Kings win that the shot count never saw coming.
Daccord stopped 25 of 26 shots, and Seattle beat Calgary 2-1 after the Flames had more pucks toward the net. The Kraken were the better team in the scoring chances, and they got their revenge on the Flames.
Chicago has given up 4.0 expected goals a game over its last ten and still has no road win this season. Florida, 7th in the East, is in a wild-card spot and the Blackhawks have a lot of ground to make up.
Florida outshot Chicago 30-21 and generated expected goals of 3.5 to 1.7, a gap that was never close. Sandis Vilmanis made the difference on the scoresheet, and the Blackhawks keep struggling to get anything going away from home.
Kempe has three goals and an assist, and the Kings lead the Sharks 5-1 in the third period. Four shots and a hat trick, and Los Angeles is pulling away while San Jose is still hanging around.
