Like anywhere in the world, Ugandans shouldn't be expected to lower their standards to buy locally-made products. What I have seen is that the majority of them will gladly buy, refer their friends and promote a Ugandan brand that delivers. It takes education. You need to answer questions repetitively like "Yes, this sofa is made in Uganda. No, it's not from pinterest". "Yes, it's the same quality as XYZ brand and it's only cheaper because we don't need to cover expensive transport costs and import duties (to the same extent)". The lower trust comes from lived experience. Folks have dealt with tailors, carpenters and snake oil vendors in the past. They were disappointed. That's also why I am more than happy to promote other locally made furniture brands like @VInteriorsLtd1 or Muti. If they succoeed, like @modernliving256 they change the perception for the whole industry. Over time, this compounds. Their clients or the friends of their clients might become Modern Living clients and vice-versa. Yet, we are still not at the level of some of the showrooms I visited in Paris or Shanghai. Modern Living is not Hermes (Yet) We all aim to get there and Mama Zaabu can tell you that on some items, we actually are better... If we want Modern Living to be in the same conversation, we need actions as an industry: - More technical management staff trained abroad. Our managers know how to run workshops in Uganda. I am yet to find someone with the carpentry and design knowledge to run a full-blown factory. - More capital to acquire the machines we need for the precision and craftmanship we aim for - Waivers and incentives for intermediary products that are not easily made locally (for our jacquard sofas to be affordable, we need affordable jacquard fabric..) - Land and incentives. It's easy to do photopps with "foreign investors". It's much harder to get the right land and transformers to a local business that reached far without any of the photopps. This apply to most locally made products. Again, this is somewhat of a unique opportunity for us. It can create lasting impact if we get behind our local industries.

BTW - in my graduate program, we discussed the inability to repatriate 100% as a "total loss" of that percentage and used that in our discounted cash flow analysis in order to determine viability of a FDI for a company. I.e. 75% repatriation = 25% expense/cash loss due to foreign political risk on the investment.
Unrestricted profit repatriation is a bit of a wild thing for the Finance Ministry to advertise, especially at a time when the dollar is riding roughshod over the Uganda Shilling.

This is in alignment with other international markets desiring foreign direct investment. Even the U.S. does this.

Hon. Musasizi We met many years ago through the @AmChamUganda One of the things we discussed was transparency. I support tax waivers for entities facing signficant challenges. That said, all: * Owners/Members * Managers/Directors * Executive Staff Should be declared, in public. With their salaries, distributions, and assets public knowledge, in order for the public taxpayer to offset their tax liabilities.
I have presented a request before the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Planning and Economic Development seeking tax waivers for three entities facing significant financial and operational challenges: 1. Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC); 2. City Harvest Electrical Installation Supply & Repairs Ltd; and 3. The Diocese of Northern Uganda. I informed the Committee that the entities had accumulated substantial tax arrears over time and were struggling to meet their tax obligations, with some facing difficulties severe enough to threaten the continuity of their operations. I explained that the entities had entered into Memorandum of Understanding with the Uganda Revenue Authority @URAuganda to settle their outstanding tax liabilities through installment payment arrangements. However, persistent financial and operational constraints had made it difficult for them to honor the agreed payment schedules. I attributed these challenges, in part, to delays and difficulties in recovering payments from their clients, including government institutions, which had significantly affected their cash flow and ability to meet their tax obligations. I appealed to the Chairperson and Members of the Committee to give due consideration to the proposed tax waivers, emphasizing the need to provide relief to the affected entities, safeguard their continued operations and give them an opportunity to recover financially and contribute to the economy. I also called on the Committee to establish clear, transparent and well-defined criteria for granting tax waivers to struggling businesses and institutions with the potential to recover and operate sustainably. I emphasized the importance of a structured approach that balances tax compliance with the need to protect viable enterprises, preserve their operations and support economic growth. A well-defined framework would help ensure that tax relief is extended responsibly to deserving entities, particularly those whose recovery and continued operation could deliver broader economic and institutional benefits.

You can get 120 years out of a road If you maintain it. Consistently. With quality workmanship and materials.
GOVT COMMISSIONS SHS 191B KATONGA BRIDGE, DEMANDS 120-YEAR LIFE SPAN FROM ENGINEERS The Minister for Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, has warned government engineers against substandard work following the commissioning and official handover of the Shs 191 billion Katonga Bridge on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The Minister revealed that technical experts had assured the government that the bridge was designed to last 120 years, warning that he would hold the engineers accountable if defects emerged before the stated lifespan elapsed. “Should I hear that there is any defect on this bridge before 120 years elapse, run away from the world because I will come for you,” he warned. The government expects the newly commissioned bridge to provide long-term service, underscoring the importance of quality construction and engineering standards in public infrastructure projects. 🇺🇬

I don't think he wants the rate to go higher. I think he wants the country to stop relying on imports so much and to try and produce more things in-house. As an example, Uganda imports Nescafe instant coffee (from Egypt). This is a tax-free import (exclusive of VAT/WHT/Infrastructure, but no import tax, since it is COMESA). USD goes out of country while cost stays the same (if BOU injects $$). Why not promote Ugandan coffee to drink fresh, instead of instant Nescafe? Not only does it taste exponentially better, but domestic consumption increases domestic cash flow - the more you consume, the more retailers, manufacturers, distributors, and laborers get cash in pocket and the more they spend locally. @JackieAkampwera @GKatabazi

Thanks for this... So he actually wants the rate to go higher so that Ugandans stop importing/ buying imported goods But.. We are not a self reliant economy. This means, even things as small as matchboxes are now going to go up so the short term pains are going to be HEAVY

Exactly what we do - except we build multi-family and commercial. Next step: Elimination of trucks and associated "tools" that the staff think they need. Subs are hired to finish work end-to-end. Manage time, budget, and quality.
My uncle subs out every single thing on his luxury home builds Foundation Framing Electrical Plumbing Finish work He just manages the process Does 8 to 10 homes a year at $5M each The person who coordinates everything Often makes more than the people doing everything

M7's rationale is that the weaker shilling works to the advantage of exporters. If they sell in USD, then the purchases will balance out the UGX locally allowing them to buy more locally with UGX (thereby increasing future exports). My thinking is that the rationale is that short/medium-term pain will be offset by long-term gains and long-term stabilization of the USD/UGX forex rate, instead of being propped up by the BOU cash injections. The real factor is to create stabilization and not let the currency run away. That's when BOU should step in.
Now that the dollar has crossed the 4,100 mark, can an economist explain to me why the governor advised that they release the country’s forex reserve in circulation and the president declined?
