What sets some of the newly improved states apart is also the improvement among disadvantaged kids. WI, for example, might have high overall literacy, but black students in WI have some of the worst NAEP scores in the country.
Meanwhile, Mississippi's black students are excelling, receiving the third highest NAEP scores in the country among black students.
Instead of masking the problems by reducing testing, Mississippi and other states are fixing them.

I think a certain amount of rambling is necessary to get a nuanced take here. I appreciate @MichaelPetrilli’s focus on student AI use. I think the discussions are different (still nuanced and important!) when we look at teacher and operational use cases. Maybe another episode?

One of the problems with test optional is that kids often assume they need a higher score than they got and don’t submit.
An extreme example: a surprising number of Yale students didn’t submit their 1500+ SATs.

And, we need better vetting of tech claims. Again, I believe tech can be beneficial, but some of the claimed benefits to student achievement are outlandish. BTW, this is a good argument for a federal role in research as an honest broker (and maybe a changed role).
