I think more founders should consider buying their second startup instead of building it from scratch.
Hear me out.
You spend five years bootstrapping a SaaS company.
Finally sell it for $3M.
You've learned how to build products, hire employees, acquire customers, and run a business.
Now you're ready for your next adventure.
Most founders immediately start thinking about what they should build next.
But what if you bought a SaaS company already doing $300K in annual revenue?
It has paying customers.
A working product.
Some organic traffic.
Maybe even a small team.
You could spend the next three years growing that business instead of spending the first year trying to get your first 10 customers again lol.
And with your experience, you might see opportunities the previous founder never had the time or resources to pursue.
Obviously buying a startup comes with its own risks. You still need to understand the customers, financials, and why the owner wants to sell.
But I think experienced founders are uniquely positioned to become incredible startup buyers.
You've already learned how to build a company.
Imagine what you could do with one that already has a head start.

Years ago, I built a simple LinkedIn script. It became GrowthX, and I bootstrapped it to exit.
I shared the whole story with @agazdecki on the @acquiredotcom podcast 👇
If you're a B2B or AI founder who wants to bootstrap to exit, follow along.
I had Riccardo Pisano on the @acquiredotcom podcast recently.
Years ago, he and his co-founder built a simple LinkedIn automation script for one of their own startups.
After that company failed, people kept asking if they could use the tool.
His co-founder wanted to turn it into a business. Riccardo had one condition.
"I won't write a single line of code until we have money in the bank."
A few weeks later, his co-founder came back with paying customers.
That became Growth-X.
They spent the next decade building the business, generated millions in revenue, and eventually sold it on Acquire.
One sentence probably saved them months of building something nobody wanted.
If you're starting a company today, don't ask friends if they'd use it.
Ask customers to pay for it.

Started building it 2 years ago while I was still in school.

Huge thanks to everyone who used it, broke it, and told me what to fix.

$500K in revenue can support very different valuations.
Growth, margins, retention, and buyer demand all change the number.
Real exit data gives you a better place to start.

Having 3 serious buyers interested in your startup can completely change how an acquisition plays out. Let's say you're selling your SaaS company.
Buyer #1 offers $3M. Pretty exciting.
You've spent five years building the thing and someone wants to pay you millions for it.
But then buyer #2 comes along and offers $3.5M.
And buyer #3 offers $3.2M, all cash, with a much shorter transition period.
Now you've got some interesting decisions to make.
You can negotiate on price.
Push for better payment terms.
Find a buyer who actually shares your vision for the business.
And most importantly, you're no longer depending on one person to get the deal done.
I've seen how much the dynamic changes when multiple buyers are genuinely interested in the same company.
Even if you end up selling to the first buyer, having other options gives you a lot more confidence at the negotiating table.
This is why I always encourage founders to get their business in front of as many qualified buyers as possible.
You spent years building something valuable.
Might as well find out who wants it most lol.

Some of the best startups I've seen solve problems that are incredibly boring.
Invoicing and billing software.
Appointment scheduling.
Inventory management.
Compliance reporting.
Stuff nobody is getting excited about at a dinner party lol.
But here's what I love about these businesses.
The problems are real.
Customers already spend money solving them.
And once your software becomes part of how someone runs their business, they have a pretty good reason to keep paying you.
Imagine building a simple scheduling tool for plumbing companies.
You get 200 businesses paying $250 a month.
That's $50K MRR or $600K a year.
All from helping plumbers manage their calendars.
Pretty awesome business if you ask me.
I think too many founders spend months looking for some revolutionary idea when there are thousands of ordinary businesses dealing with the same annoying problems every single day.
You don't need to invent the next social network.
Sometimes you just need to make something that saves a business owner five hours a week.
Boring software can make a lot of money.
And I absolutely love that about entrepreneurship.
