Self-reflection:
I'm acutely aware that I was dealt what was a very good hand in life (by most standards).
One which, on the whole, I'd have to say I've played appallingly badly.
Which is, as futile wastes of time, space & finite resources go, wholly unforgiveable.

Afghan women are totally disappointed.
No one hear us.
No action for us.
We are totally removed from the society.
We are totally lonely. where is the international community?
No one count us human in Afghanistan. 💔
Oh for pity's sake, Scotland.

Another job interview today.
Not my finest performance, but got the impression they weren't very interested anyway.
Internal candidate (who'd worked there for 5 years), innit.
Eh.

Now Russell Brand's been convicted of rape, we need to talk about Sylvie Berki. Because she can't speak for herself.
In 2014, Ms Berki said she'd been assaulted by Russell Brand.
But if she talks about it, even now, she risks jail.

Sean Lock will be looking down and thinking "I knew this day would come".
He always knew Russell Brand was a wrongun.
Never, ever liked him, found him at all funny, or thought him "charismatic".
Wish he hadn't turned out to be anywhere near this much of a wrong 'un, mind.
Those poor women.
So, now that Russell Brand is going to prison for rape, perhaps it's time for some of you to engage in a little overdue self-reflection.
I'm talking about those of you who dismissed his victims as money-grabbing whores.
Those of you who concocted deranged conspiracy theories about a deep-state plot to silence Brand simply because he talked bollocks on his YouTube channel.
Because beneath all that sanctimonious, conspiratorial bullshit were real women, real victims, who had endured horrific sexual assaults at the hands of a rapist.
Perhaps spare a thought for them next time you're tempted to turn someone else's suffering into another instalment of your tinfoil fantasies.

Shocking…
This is Taraneh Alidoosti. The actress who represented Iranian cinema to the world, the star of the film that won the Oscar. What did she do? She posted one photo without the hijab during Woman Life Freedom uprising in 2022 to show her solidarity with the People of Iran .
That is all. She said no to executions, no to the crackdown. That same week they came to her home and took her to Evin prison. When she was released, she was no longer the same Taraneh. Doctors diagnosed her with a rare illness that made her skin fall off and ravaged her body. She is still under treatment.
They say it was caused by drug interaction. Which drugs? What did they give her in that prison? No one answers. Today this photo is going viral across Iran because people want to see the price of one photo without hijab. To the regime it was just a photo.
To us, Taraneh is a woman who gave up everything: her career, her cinema, her health. And even now, in silence, mourning her father, she has not bowed. Taraneh, you did not just remove the hijab. You tore off their mask. We are your voice.

WHO OWNS SCOTLAND? Each month I update the >5100 records on who owns Scotland. Together they cover 5.95 million hectares of rural land or 77.3% of rural Scotland. Each month I discover new owners. The October 2026 update has just been published and reveals an interesting sale. 1/3
Precisely.
Nobody *needs* their freezers to be centrally controlled at all.
It's an absolutely mythical "convenience", not in any way "progress".
And after the first attack, why did nobody even begin to think it might just happen again..??

Jonathan Meades: Remember The Future (1997).
The first documentary from his series Even Further Abroad, Meades asks about Britain and technological modernism and our national dread of awe. Big Tech was never going to fit into Little England he concludes, despite the postwar lurch towards the white heat of technology and a brief flirtation with architectural determinism. Instead "The shape of things to come is the shape of what's already been. We're invited to advance timorously into the past."
What's old is new again and Meades's arguments about Nineties Britain are back in play: data centres and high speed rail, wind farms and modular nuclear reactors - is it really us? Is our suspicion of technological utopia a hangup, or a well honed defence against the petty tyrannies of planned progress? Or is it just an argument over taste? One person's national heritage is another person's Victorian monstrosity etc. We're headed into the future regardless, why argue about the brickwork there.
Meades is acerbic as well as informed and thoughtful, and his documentaries should be Grade 2 listed: preserved for future generations to gawp at on school visits to the world of analogue television, where we thought 30 minutes of architecture on BBC2 before the snooker started was good for us.

National newspapers aren’t covering the ongoing grooming gangs in South Yorkshire and local press are further exploiting them for subscriber payments by making the report “premium.
Three Asian men groomed a teenage Rotherham girl with vodka and cannabis and raped her 15 times.
I can’t give you the full story because it’s hidden behind a paywall. Comments turned off on social media posts. Of course.
This is still happening and the lack of care still exists.

A tale of two EU conferences:
On Tuesday afternoon, two events will take place in the centre of Brussels' EU district. Both of them are on the topic of women.
One of the conferences will host a panel of women who have been punished materially, socially, professionally, or otherwise, for insisting that women are real, that we are adult human and female, and that that definition matters for any law or policy that claims to protect or advance our interests.
One of the central themes discussed on the panel will be the treatment doled out to these individual women who have refused to abandon this material definition of womanhood. Court cases, physical violence, social exclusion, threats... you name it, we've been on the receiving end of it.
Another topic for the panel to discuss is a much wider and arguably worse: the steadfast refusal of the people in the same Brussels EU district -- from the media, to elected MEPs, to EU Commission officials - to acknowledge the role that they have played in these panellists' being treated this way, and their role in the erasure of sex as a coherent and important factor in the organisation of society.
For at least a decade, the powers-that-be in Brussels have pretended not to notice the erasure of sex in law, all while they have been themselves been advancing and promoting it. Exceptions, of course, come from traditionally right-wing parties (with some particularly relentless championnes, in the form of @MargaPisa @LaurenceTrochu @Barbarabonte and some notable others).
Athena Forum founder Faika El-Nagashi has told me that she thinks most EU officials (elected or otherwise) are not aware of the issue, as opposed to pretending not to be aware. I think she is far too charitable.
I myself had my employment contract terminated by EU officials because my insistence on the material definition of woman. I wrote on the European Commission internal message board about the danger (and stupidity) of pretending women and girls are not a definable phenomenon all while purporting to have a raft of policies and laws that are "for" us. A recent FOI request revealed that the Commission officials considered my views on material reality of sex to be contrary to EU values.
Which brings me to conference number two that will take place on Tuesday.
The other conference is about women as an idealised set of stereotypes that can be adopted or discarded at will, a concept that is open to ownership by any man who enjoys being seen by others as a woman - which a lot of men apparently do (usually as part of a distressing and all-consuming sexual paraphilia).
I had assumed, in my naivety, that once people in power heard the message that it harms women and girls - especially if you come from a lower class background, which I do - to pretend sex isn't real and doesn't matter, that they would do what was necessary to roll back the damage. I thought that once I presented the evidence that most men who claim to be women are motivated by sexual arousal, that politicians would find the courage stop causing more damage.
I was very, very wrong.
And those are the people who will be attending this other conference on Tuesday, the "gender" conference, which will kick of "Gender equality week" in the European Parliament. There's no point in attending, because we know exactly what they will say. Empower, glass ceiling, leadership. They will not mention sex, or Athena Forum, or the punished women on the panel *just down the street* (no Parliament invitation was offered to Athena Forum for this, the week of celebrating "gender" equality", which I think tells you everything you need to know.)
As it happens, the woman-is-a-feeling gender event finishes right at the moment that the @AthenaForumEU event begins (6.30PM). Take of that symbolism what you will.
I will be at the women's conference, and I will be tweeting it minute-by-minute. I hope to get some video interviews with some of the (truly courageous) women who will be there.

Picard taught me more about leadership than any MBA could.
He never raised his voice to be heard. He listened before he decided. He let Riker, Data, Worf argue him out of positions, and then owned the call completely. When he was wrong, he said so in front of the crew. When he was right, he didn't gloat.
And when he had to stand alone — against Starfleet, against the Borg, against a Cardassian with four lights — he stood.
That is the whole job. Build people who will tell you the truth, then carry the weight yourself.
Patrick Stewart played it so well that a generation of us mistook a character for a manual. Turns out the manual was fine.
A great actor, and a Yorkshire kid who started as an obituary writer. Today the obituary is his.
Make it so, Sir Patrick. Rest well.
