On behalf of The Inn and members we send our warmest thanks to Master McGowan, our Treasurer of 2022 and the second Woman Treasurer in the Inn’s history. Master McGowan welcomed students back to the Inn to be called in person and celebrated 100 years or Women in Law

We will remember them.

In November 2009, Queen Elizabeth II joined 55 Benchers at a luncheon given in the Inn’s Parliament Chamber to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the Treasurership in 1949 of the Queen Mother, our Royal Bencher.

In 1950, Her Majesty the Queen, then the Princess Elizabeth, visited the Inn for the first time, to attend a State Banquet hosted in Hall by the Foreign Office, attended by members of the Royal Family of the Netherlands.

In this map, a later copy of a 1563 plan of legal London, one can see large open spaces around the buildings, in great contrast to the heavily built-up, modern day city. The original Temple Stairs, providing direct access to the Thames, are also visible.

On 2 February 1602, the first ever recorded performance of Twelfth Night was given in Middle Temple Hall. Since then, there have been many different versions played out at the Inn, including one in 1970 by the Oxford and Cambridge Shakespeare Company.

Charles Dickens was admitted to the Inn in 1839 and withdrew in 1855 after forging a successful career in literature rather than law. #Archives #Dickens

There are some interesting pieces of ephemera within the Middle Temple Archive. This ticket, for a performance of Charles Johnson’s ‘The Country Lasses’ in the early 18th century, is an unusual survivor. #archives #TheatreHistory
