In February 2021, Ana Clara Gomes Machado, just 5 years old, was fatally shot during a police operation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Military police officer Bruno Dias Delaroli was charged with her murder.
In 2024, Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and a sitting Brazilian senator, joined the officer’s legal defense team.
His name appears in a Brazilian Superior Court of Justice ruling concerning an appeal seeking to prevent the officer from facing a jury trial.
The appeal was rejected. The officer has not yet been convicted.
Why did a sitting senator personally involve himself in defending a police officer accused of killing a five-year-old child?
Five years later, Ana Clara’s family is still waiting for justice.
