We have a funded PhD opportunity to start this year for an exciting collaborative project with UKHSA as part of the Health Protection Research Unit in Public Health Genomics findaphd.com/phds/project... The question "how do we use metagenomic data for the best clinical outcomes?"
It's supervised by a scientists, a clinical academic with expertise in ICU and respiratory, a clinical microbiologist and antimicrobial stewardship lead and a leader in applying and implementing public health metagenomics so there's real breadth of expertise to tap into
If you want to join the group then multiple opportunities available at the moment. If you don't like what we do then we've got you covered there too! Funded PhD projects for UK and Overseas students in our Department: findaphd.com/phds/department… join a lovely bunch of talented PGRs
Publication day for us and a very first, first author review for @13KaranSandhu 🥳 publications.ersnet.org/cont… Karan's summarised the respiratory microbiome in COPD, the importance of macrophages in the disease and how we think these might be interacting with each other.
Macrophages are frontline immune cells, and therefore are going to be constantly interfacing with the respiratory microbiome in health and disease. In COPD they are an orchestrator of disease processes and the microbiome is skewed - does this give us new ways to approach COPD?
Thanks to the team
@kyliebelchamber
and I supervise the project together, @DrAAronScott and
@amandatatler
have leant their support and expertise generously and thanks to European Respiratory Review and our reviewers who helped to tighten things up for us.

I have three PhD studentships available currently through the MIBTP DTP warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fa... on different aspects of the respiratory microbiome, interaction with mucin with @LucyICM the resistome with @mmcbuckner and pathobionts with @Bacterioskeptic
Please share widely, we're a friendly supportive group. These are competitive, funded PhDs which would cover fees for either Overseas or Home applicants. If you're interested get in touch here or by email and we can discuss and support your application. birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profi…...
The logo needs work, will have to try and get a beard on a set of lungs - this is more the sort of account where other group members might post, but for now it's mostly me.

I have a funded PhD opportunity through MIBTP to look at pneumococci in adults with @MikeyJ (also check out two other projects with Mike and Prof. Joan Geoghegan on other respiratory pathobionts) link here: warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/… Happy to be contacted with questions
MIBTP doctoral training partnership has had renewed funding, congratulations to that team! Keep an eye on the website warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/… and FindAPhD.com for the details. I'll be advertising 3 PhD projects on different aspects of the respiratory microbiome
Colleagues in Microbes Infection and Microbiomes birmingham.ac.uk/research/mi… and across the colleges here will have opportunities too
Reach out to people if you're interested in the opportunity!
Thanks again to @BALRcommunity for supporting @13KaranSandhu attendance at the @atscommunity conference this year, her poster talk was really well received! All sorts of lovely follow up data too now so watch this space 👀

Pathogenesis is Not a Trait—It's an Outcome. Excellent summary of 'damage-response framework'. Words like 'pathogen', 'pathobiont', commensal, opportunist don't work: they give microbes traits that are not their own. Only outcome of host + microbe matters
