๐ฅ Empowerment Through Education: Womenโs Self-Defense Class
This past Tuesday, our Police Department had the pleasure of hosting another Womenโs Self-Defense Class focused on building confidence, increasing awareness, and providing participants with practical skills to help protect themselves.
The class offered an opportunity for community members to learn valuable self-defense techniques, discuss personal safety, and gain knowledge they can carry with them into their everyday lives. Beyond learning physical skills, classes like these help empower individuals to feel more confident, prepared, and aware of their surroundings.
We are grateful to everyone who came out and participated! Creating a safer community goes beyond law enforcement โ it also means providing opportunities for education, empowerment, and connection.
Thank you for being part of our community and for taking an active role in your personal safety. ๐
Our S.A.F.E. classes fill up quickly so be sure to keep an eye out on our social media for future class announcements. We hope to see you at the next one! ๐

The Milpitas Police Department Citizen Volunteer Program was established in 2002 to provide community members with meaningful opportunities to serve alongside the Police Department. Gwen Osborne joined the Citizen Volunteer Program in 2007 and recently completed her 19th year of dedicated service.
Gwen recently announced her retirement from the Citizen Volunteer Program, concluding nearly two decades of exceptional service to the Milpitas Police Department and the community. Throughout her years of service, Gwen consistently demonstrated a willingness to assist wherever she was needed and could always be counted on to support the Department and those we serve. Gwen dedicated countless hours assisting Police Evidence Technicians with the processing of property and evidence, supporting the Records Unit with court runs, and providing Child Identification Fingerprinting services to local families at community events throughout the City. She readily accepted new assignments and frequently volunteered during evenings and weekends to support special projects, including DUI checkpoints and Police Department outreach at City-sponsored events. In 2019, Gwen was honored as the 2019 Citizen Volunteer of the Year, highlighting her tremendous contributions to the department.
Gwenโs dedication, reliability, and selfless commitment to service have made a lasting impact on the Milpitas Police Department and provided tremendous benefit to the Milpitas community. ๐๐ Learning, Laughter, and Community Connections! ๐๐
Last week, our officers traded the patrol car for the playground and had a great time visiting students at Monarch Christian and Burnett Elementary School! ๐
Our young friends learned about when to call 9-1-1, what police officers do to help keep our community safe, and, one of the highlights of the day - got an up-close look inside a police car! ๐ Of course, we couldnโt leave without handing out a few MPD stickers too! โญ
School visits are always a favorite for our officers. They give us a chance to answer questions, share a few laughs, and most importantly, help kids get to know the officers who serve their community. Building trust and positive relationships starts early, and sometimes it starts with a sticker and a police car! ๐
A big thank you to Monarch Christian and Burnett Elementary School for inviting us and making our officers feel so welcome!
๐ซ Want MPD to visit your school? ๐ซ
Reach out to Officer Padilla at [email protected] to schedule a visit. Weโd love to stop by! ๐๐

๐๐ต Eyes Up. Phone Down. Drive Safe ๐๐ต
Today is National Do Not Disturb While Driving Day. A good reminder that the text, call, email, or notification can wait. Keeping your attention on the road helps keep you and everyone around you safe. ๐
Before you put the car in drive:
๐ฑ Turn on Do Not Disturb While Driving
๐ต Put your phone somewhere you wonโt be tempted to reach for it
๐ Keep your eyes up and watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles
๐ Need to use your phone? Pull over somewhere safe first
It only takes a few seconds of distraction for everything to change.
So, wherever youโre headed today, give the road your full attention. Put the phone down, enjoy the drive, and get there safely. ๐๐
No notification is worth a collision.

The Milpitas Police Department has been awarded a $74,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support public awareness and special traffic enforcement efforts through September 2027.
What does that mean for our community? ๐
Throughout the year, youโll see our officers conducting targeted traffic safety operations focused on the driving behaviors that contribute to crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
Grant-funded efforts will include:
๐ซ๐บ DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols to identify impaired drivers and help keep them off our roads.
๐ฆ Traffic enforcement operations focused on speeding, red-light violations, stop signs, and other dangerous driving behaviors.
๐ถโโ๏ธ๐ด Pedestrian and bicycle safety enforcement at intersections and areas where collisions are occurring.
๐๏ธ Motorcycle safety operations in areas with higher motorcycle traffic and collision activity.
๐ Seat belt and child safety seat enforcement to help protect drivers and passengers of all ages.
๐ Traffic safety education for youth and community members covering distracted driving, impaired driving, teen driving, and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
๐ฎ Specialized officer training to improve the identification and apprehension of drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
๐ DUI data analysis to help identify repeat offenders and support focused enforcement efforts.
Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. Whether youโre driving, walking, riding a bicycle, or traveling by motorcycle, the choices we make on the road can make a difference.
Slow down. Stay focused. Drive sober. Buckle up. And help us make every trip through Milpitas a safer one. ๐
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

๐๐ Honoring Those Who Helped Build Our Department ๐๐
Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting our 1st Annual Retiree Luncheon, welcoming back retired members of the Milpitas Police Department for an afternoon of great food, plenty of stories, and reconnecting with familiar faces. โค๏ธ๐
Our retirees also had the opportunity to tour the department and see some of the upgrades, improvements, and new technology that have been added over the years. A lot may have changed, but one thing hasnโt , the sense of family and pride that comes with being part of MPD.
It was great hearing old stories, sharing some laughs, and catching up with those who helped shape our department into what it is today.
A career may end, but the connection to our police family doesnโt. To all of our retirees: thank you for your years of dedicated service, the traditions you established, and the foundation you built for those who followed.
We were proud to welcome you home and look forward to making this tradition even bigger next year! ๐๐

๐ October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month ๐
Domestic violence doesnโt always leave a visible mark.
It can take many forms, including physical violence, threats, intimidation, emotional or verbal abuse, isolation, and financial control. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, background, or circumstance.
This month, we encourage our community to know the signs, check in on one another, and speak up when something doesnโt seem right. Sometimes, simply listening, believing someone, and helping them connect with support can make a meaningful difference.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. You are not alone. ๐
The Milpitas Police Department is committed to supporting survivors, holding offenders accountable, and working alongside our community partners to help keep our community safe.
๐ Local resources include:
โข AACI (Asian Americans for Community Involvement): (408) 975-2739
โข Community Solutions: (877) 363-7238
โข Maitri: (888) 862-4874
โข Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence: (408) 279-2962
โข YWCA DV/Rape Crisis: (800) 572-2782
๐ Know the signs. Support survivors. Speak up.
Together, we can help build a community where everyone feels safe, supported, and heard.

๐ง๏ธ A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way! ๐ง๏ธ
With El Niรฑo conditions potentially bringing periods of heavier rain and wet weather, now is a good time for a few simple reminders to help you and your family be prepared.
๐ Clear gutters and storm drains
๐ Check your emergency supplies for water, food, flashlights, batteries, and first aid supplies
๐พ Include your pets in your family plan
๐ฑ Stay up to date on local weather and alerts
๐ And remember, never drive through flooded roadways
No need to wait for the rain to start. Taking a few small steps ahead of time can make things a whole lot easier when wet weather arrives.
Plan ahead, stay informed, and stay safe, Milpitas! ๐๐ง๏ธ
