Some more images of the damage to the cairn at Ballygawley. The first is of the initial damage from 12 months ago, the second of the more recent and more extensive damage #neolithic #sligoworldheritagesite

Yes, needs to be tackled from lots of angles of course Steve. Sligo Neolithic Landscapes are unrivaled in Ireland we'd argue (a level of preservation and landscape integrity that doesn't exist at any other major passage tomb complex), and thus fully warrant WHS status.

These sites are so extraordinary - there has to be a way to fix this. We think it's by UNESCO World Heritage Site designation:

The local St John's Eve Bonfire eventually took off, despite the torrential rain (and the social distancing!). It was swirling and dancing like a living thing, accompanied by a strange half-light, as the sun set in a gap in the leaden skies. Worth the wetting! #Sligo #StJohnsEve

The image is from Cecil P. Martin's 'Prehistoric man in Ireland'. It was found with letters to Prof. Alexander Macalister among his materials at the Duckworth Laboratory in Cambridge. Prof. Macalister's son 'R.A.S. Macalister' excavated Carrowkeel in 1911.

Odd that the mini-cairn is hardly visible in this image from c. the late 1970s or 80s. So it appears that it was present in the early 1920s/30s, was cleared off the cairn subsequently (presumably by the authorities), and is back again now. Even Neolithic people would be puzzled!

There are so many Neolithic tombs in Sligo. Often they are just glimpsed in the distance, or through a car window as here. This one is the fabulous Cairn B, part of the southern cluster of Sligo passage tombs at Carrowkeel/Keashcorran #sligoworldheritagesite

Yes there are two ways to it, but if you haven't been before it is better to do it with someone who knows the terrain.

Example of the kind of threats these remarkable yet fragile sites are under. In recent images taken by @GallagherSligo you can see a deep hole dug into the cairn at Teach Cailleach a Bheara. (What misguided idea would motivate someone to this?) @sligococo #Sligo #Archaeology

Two lesser known Co. Sligo passage tombs seen here as grey circles on Knocknashee (wonderful Drone shot by Gareth Wray). The 'Sídhe' name is often found at locations with passage tombs. The word refers to ancient Irish deities, the Tuatha Dé Danann. 1/4

Carrowkeel in the 1970s we are guessing from the fashion. We need to make sure these monuments are intact for future generations to enjoy and be inspired by too #sligo #Ireland #sustainabletourism @SligoChamber

Summer solstice in the air. In this photo at one of the Carrowkeel cairns you can see the smoke from the St. John's eve bonfires in the distance #Rituals #SummerSolstice #sligo #Ireland

Genetic evidence directly connecting the people at the (cough, cough: older) Sligo passage tombs at Carrowkeel to those buried at #Newgrange and the Boyne Valley complex youtu.be/buuzQeuvj3Q. Brilliant work by @_larsporsena et al!
