The selection of drill and blast parameters dictates overall mine productivity, rock breakage quality, and downstream processing efficiency (CSIR-CIMFR; Ramesh et al., 2023). Burden represents the horizontal distance from the charge axis to the nearest open free face, whereas spacing refers to the distance between adjacent blastholes along a row. How does burden spacing influence fragmentation, muckpile displacement, and explosive energy distribution? Share your ideas in comments. The cut-off grade serves as the primary technical and economic filter distinguishing mineable ore from waste material. Traditional mine planning historically relied on a static break-even cut-off grade, which classifies material as ore as long as revenues cover operating and capital costs for a defined metal price. However, fixed thresholds fail to account for the dynamic financial realities and time value of money inherent in mineral extraction. How can cut-off grade optimization maximize NPV and improve cash flow generation? Share your ideas in comments. Capital investments in resource extraction ventures are substantial and require years of development before positive cash flow begins. An evaluation of whether a mineral deposit justifies capital allocation requires converting uncertain future production into present-day economic value. Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis serves as the primary financial tool to evaluate mine feasibility by forecasting life-of-mine cash flows and discounting them to reflect the time value of money and project risk (Topal, 2008; Mirakovski et al., 2010). How can discounted cash flow analysis determine the economic viability of a mining project? Share your ideas in comments. Stemming length optimization reduces flyrock and improves blast energy confinement. Surface mining and quarrying operations depend heavily on explosive energy confinement within the borehole. Inert material placed above the explosive charge, known as stemming, prevents detonation gases from venting prematurely into the atmosphere. Deficiencies in stemming design cause collar blowouts, severe airblast, excessive flyrock projection, and wasted explosive power. How can stemming length optimization reduce flyrock and improve blast energy confinement? Share your thoughts in comments. 3D alteration modelling pinpoints mineralization targets, transforming exploration success. Modern mineral exploration increasingly targets deep-seated or concealed orebodies obscured by thick overburden and post-mineralization cover. Deep overburden and complex multi-phase deformation frequently obscure high-grade mineralization at depth. Conventional two-dimensional surface mapping often fails to detect blind mineralization in structurally complex settings. Three-dimensional alteration modelling provides a quantitative, spatial framework that converts mineralogical, geochemical, and spectral data into actionable vectors toward ore. How can 3D alteration modelling help identify potential mineralization targets during exploration? Share your ideas in comments. 3D structural modelling reveals faults, folds, and mineralized zones with clarity. Traditional two-dimensional geological maps and cross-sections struggle to portray complex, polyphase subsurface architectures accurately. Implicit three-dimensional structural modelling addresses this limitation by unifying drill hole logs, surface outcrop mapping, mine level maps, and airborne geophysics into interactive digital volumes. Advanced interpolation algorithms transform discrete spatial observations into continuous structural surfaces and orebody models. How does 3D structural modelling help identify faults, folds, and mineralized zones? Share your ideas in comments. Ore depth, grade, and geometry dictate open pit versus underground mining. The choice between open pit and underground mining represents one of the most fundamental engineering decisions in mineral resource development. Early project evaluation requires a comprehensive analysis of deposit geometry, economic feasibility, safety parameters, and site-specific operational risks. Resource engineers must avoid reliance on single rules of thumb, as each ore deposit presents unique rock mass mechanics, spatial orientations, grade distributions, and depth profiles. 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆: How to ensure successful recovery of a stope leaving a small pillar underneath the paste? As part of the stope stability assessment, it was found that there would be a high risk of experiencing a failure mode in the hanging wall (HW) due to the critical flat joint set recorded during window mapping. Furthermore, there was a triangle pillar formed between the paste filled stope above and the stope to be mined below. Optimal drilling and blast techniques were used resulting in no failure after blasting the stope. Techniques included drilling up and down hole, using low density explosive product, adequate blasting sequence and slower delay timing, all contributed to the success of the stope. Optimize belt conveyor systems to minimize downtime in mining processing plants. Mineral processing operations rely on continuous belt conveyor systems to transport crushed ore from primary crushers to downstream processing circuits. An unexpected conveyor failure creates a critical bottleneck that halts the entire plant, incurring production losses ranging from $10,000 to over $300,000 per hour (OxMaint, 2026; Schools, 2024). How can belt conveyor systems minimize downtime in mining processing plants? Share your ideas in comments. Tune vibrating screen parameters to boost efficiency and cut recirculating loads. In mineral processing plants, vibrating screens perform a vital classification role. Many operations treat these machines as simple mechanical agitators, yet screen performance dictates total plant throughput and energy consumption. Poorly adjusted screens cause undersized particles to remain in the overflow stream, which sends valuable fine material back to crushers or grinding mills. How can vibrating screen parameters improve screening efficiency and reduce recirculating loads? Share your ideas in comments. In a crushing operation, these wear parts will continue to accrue costs over time, and the failure of these parts isn’t necessarily a matter of bad luck. Most of the initial wear on a jaw crusher can be attributed to the operation of the jaw crusher and its setup in the field. By shifting from a paradigm of simply replacing parts to one of optimization in the operation of the jaw crusher, it’s possible to greatly extend the life of these parts and reduce the cost per ton. How to extend the life of your jaw crusher wear parts? Share your thoughts in comments. Vertical crater retreat: the mining method that caves upward. VCR mining is considered an advanced type of underground mining process whereby economically viable mineral deposits are extracted through efficient and safe mining while protecting the workforce from being exposed to unsupported open stopes. The mining process is widely used in the case of steeply dipping massive orebodies. There are three major aspects associated with VCR mining, which can be summarized by the acronym VCR itself, namely (1) vertical or nearly vertical nature of the orebody, (2) crater blasting based on Livingston’s theory of cratering, and (3) upward retreat mining. What are the advantages of VCR compared to sublevel caving method in underground mining? Share your thoughts in comments. Learning from investigations: Workers evacuated after gas levels rise. Seventy workers were withdrawn from Metropolitan Colliery, an underground coal mine in Helensburgh, south of Sydney, on 21 March 2019 after carbon dioxide and methane levels increased unexpectedly to hazardous levels. A supervisor on the longwall face initially detected increasing gas levels that appeared to be coming from floor cracks. Supervisors continued to monitor gas levels, and when gas levels continued to increase, the decision was made to withdraw workers and remove power to the underground parts of the mine, in accordance with the mine’s procedures. Remote gas monitoring systems indicated levels in the longwall return airway and the main return airway continued to increase. Peak levels measured 16.1 per cent methane and 15.9 per cent carbon dioxide in the longwall return airway, and 4 per cent methane in parts of the main return airway. Workers remained out of the mine for seven days until carbon dioxide and methane levels returned to non-hazardous levels.
