“The Prime Minister took office promising to end 40 years of neoliberalism. While today’s Budget offers areas of much-needed economic relief, it does not rewire the economy." Our co-director @MiriamBrett comments on the UK government's Budget, announced today. Full response 🧵

It's publication day! An Injury to All: The Unmaking of the British Working Class is published today, 27 October 2026, by @VersoBooks. My book is a new history how Britain's formerly powerful working class was pushed to the political margins. Order🔽 versobooks.com/en-gb/product…

A third of meetings taken by senior Treasury officials this year were with the financial services industry. None were with trade unions. Who’s really shaping this week’s budget?: abolishwestminster.com/finan… - latest from me.

Oh Brazil, look what you were up against and look what you did. A stunning victory for workers, for indigenous peoples, for the Amazon, for hope.

I was lucky enough to attend the @ReidFoundation annual lecture and hear the treasure that is Jackie Kay treat us to poems on protests, workers’ rights, grief, life and everything in between.

Governments can watch as the sector continues to shed jobs - even with new licences - while oil and gas companies work to maximise profits. Or they can choose to provide a meaningful roadmap for workers and communities; one that delivers a genuinely sustainable future.

Insightful thoughts from Ewan, as always
A few thoughts on the announcement that the Jackdaw gas field development will go ahead 🧵 You'll hear claims today arguing we need Jackdaw for various reasons. Primarily some combination of energy security, perhaps cheaper bills and jobs. We should be sceptical of them.

If none of the Jackdaw gas was exported, the most optimistic scenario has it meeting 2% of the UK’s annual gas demand over a 10 year period.
I welcome today's decision on Jackdaw. I have always argued that we should use our own resources to enhance our energy security. (1/3)

“This project does not have an impact on affordability and bills'' - The UK Government Energy Secretary
NEW: Jackdaw will start to supply gas to UK homes and businesses from the end of this month. Andy Burnham said: “Our approach will ensure we can boost energy security, back British workers, ringfence future North Sea proceeds… and - crucially - bring down bills.”

There is an increasingly disingenuous narrative peddled in Scotland about the impacts of granting new oil and gas licenses on North Sea production levels and job security. Amid this, it’s important to look at evidence 🧵

The net zero transition has the potential to create up to 40,000 more energy jobs than will be lost, but leaving it to market forces will fail workers. We need a proactive green industrial strategy backed by effective labour market planning. futureeconomy.scot/publicati…

Burning Jackdaw won’t insulate households from unaffordable energy costs, won’t provide job security for North Sea oil and gas workers, and won’t meaningfully impact our domestic energy security. Oxfam notes that it will, however, cause over 8,000 heat-related deaths.
