For the first time in my life, I’ve truly understood that when someone genuinely wants you in their life, they find a way to keep you there. They make an effort, they show up and they make it clear that you matter to them. Watching people go above and beyond for the person they love and see a future with has made me realise something painful about my past relationships: I was trying to build something with people who weren’t willing to meet me halfway. I used to think love meant being patient, understanding and holding on even when I was the only one trying. I made excuses for inconsistency and convinced myself that if I loved someone enough, eventually they would love me the way I needed to be loved. But I understand now that love isn’t supposed to feel like constantly convincing someone to choose you. You shouldn’t have to beg for effort or question your place in someone’s life. I’m no longer measuring love by how hard I’m willing to fight for someone. I’m learning to recognise it by how willingly they fight for me too.
