The only time I’ve ever feared for my life at a sporting event was at a West Virginia football game.
The year before I went to UVA, I played football at Fork Union Military Academy.
Midseason, we traveled to Morgantown to face West Virginia’s JV team on a Thursday morning. The night before, we went to the Virginia Tech game at West Virginia, all of us wearing our military uniforms.
One problem: our coach was wearing a maroon jacket.
The West Virginia fans took one look at us and decided we were with Virginia Tech.
Then West Virginia pulled off a massive upset, stunning No. 3 Virginia Tech, 28-7.
The loss knocked Virginia Tech out of national title contention and changed the trajectory of its season. The Hokies had opened 6-0, but finished 2-5 over their final seven games, including a 35-21 loss at UVA on November 29.
Most people remember the game for Frank Beamer slapping Ernest Wilford on the helmet.
I remember the West Virginia fans.
It was wild.
We were screamed at. Things were thrown at us. Midway through the fourth quarter, we started filing out and needed a police escort back to our buses.
For the first and only time at a sporting event, I genuinely feared for my physical safety.
As we drove to our hotel, we could see the infamous couches burning in the streets.
The next morning, we played West Virginia’s JV team.
And won.
I’ve always suspected we had one decisive advantage: we had actually gone to sleep the night before.
And to this day, whenever I see that Flying WV, I can still see the smoke from those couches.
Go Hoos. 🔶⚔️🔷
