First they came for the teaching unions. And I cheered. Then they came for the rest of the McBlob. And I cheered again. Column on the rot within the Scottish educational establishment. thetimes.com/article/dbc1ae8…

I guessed the winner of the cello composition correctly. Which is a bit of a surprise, as I don’t know much about stringed instruments.
Serendipity! Wanted to see the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, and happened to notice there was the final of a cello competition this afternoon. Marvellous.

I recently watched a couple of Korean films on my flights to and from Seoul. I was amused by the number of times insults were translated - euphemistically, I presume, - as either “loser” or “garbage”. I was left wondering what the originals might be!

During a silent patrol, the crew of a Royal Navy Amphion-class submarine investigates an unfamiliar sound echoing through the hull. In the 125-year history of the Royal Navy Submarine Service nearly 6000 submariners and over 150 submarines never returned. Lest we forget.

Los periodistas británicos son mucho más duros que los estadounidenses. Por eso pasan cosas como esta: (El entrevistado es Steven Cortes, aliado de Donald Trump. El entrevistador es Mehdi Hasan).

One of the loveliest sights in Seoul back in 2012 was the LED Rose Garden., by the Great East Gate, Dongdaemum. I searched in vain a few days ago, only to find it had closed in 2019. So I've used AI to improve a fuzzy photo I took back then. Marvellous!

When I recorded "Carnaval", Volodya [=Horowitz] refused to hear it - the only work of Schumann he didn't like. However, he did perform it one season (during a bad medical period) and the tapes from Philadelphia and Tokyo sound like late Alfred Cortot on cocaine. (Ivan Davis)

In which I learn that - according to the ancient biographer Plutarch - King Juba II (c.48BC-AD23) calculated the number of “Sabine women” carried off by Romulus as a precise 683.
