Jim Carrey beat Tom Hanks for Best Actor. Weeks later, the Oscars didn’t nominate him at all.
In January 1999, Carrey was still best known for Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber.
At the Golden Globes, he was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for The Truman Show. His competition included Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan, Ian McKellen, Nick Nolte and Stephen Fry.
Lauren Bacall read the name. It was Carrey.
Even he said he hadn’t expected it.
Later, he explained why a dramatic role scared him. If you’re funny, people say the joke didn’t work. If you’re serious, they say they don’t like “that guy’s essence.”
A few weeks later, the Oscar nominations came out. His name wasn’t on the list.
A year later, he won a second Golden Globe, for Man on the Moon. Again, no Oscar nomination.
This time, he joked that he was “the Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes.”
