Ok, now you know how to synchronize applauses
Four hundred fireflies, each blinking at its own slightly different pace, start as random sparkle.
Each one nudges its rhythm toward the flashes it sees. Below a critical coupling nothing happens; above it a crowd suddenly locks, and the whole field blinks as one. The switch is a phase transition, like water freezing.
The model was written down by Yoshiki Kuramoto in 1975 for chemical oscillators. Real fireflies do it too: along some Southeast Asian rivers, thousands of males flash in unison, and early reports of it were doubted for years.
The same maths describes pacemaker cells in the heart and the moment a concert hall's applause turns into clapping in time. In theory the switch sits at K = 1.0 (grey curve), and the crowd needs a little time to follow it.
The following map might be more colorful and fun :) @domainofscience

Mathematics is usually divided into a few large families: foundations and logic, algebra, number theory, geometry and topology, analysis, discrete mathematics, and probability and statistics. Applied mathematics draws on all of them.
The divisions are not clean. Algebraic topology studies shapes with group theory, analytic number theory studies primes with complex analysis, and probability is formally built on measure theory. The Mathematics Subject Classification used by journals lists 63 top-level areas.
Any map like this is a choice about grouping rather than a fixed fact. Which branch would you add, or put somewhere else?

¿Ya tuviste tu cafétarsis hoy? 🇨🇴☕️

Back in 2018, Philipp Dettmer, the founder of kurzgesagt, was being treated for a stage 3 B testicular cancer. This was a very serious situation, but it is not a sad story! In fact, going through chemotherapy was one of the most interesting experiences of his life. He was treated with Cisplatin, which, in a nutshell, put his body through a controlled medical violence. This toxic chemotherapy agent is a hero and a villain of this story, but it absolutely saved his life.
So what exactly is Cisplatin, and what was his body going through during the treatment? Watch our full video to find out: kgs.link/Cisplatin
