The man who didn't trust the computer
September 26, 1983. Just after midnight, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov was on watch in a secret bunker south of Moscow when the alarm went off.
The Soviet Union's new Oko satellite system reported an American ICBM headed for the USSR. Then another. By the end, the screen showed five.
The timing couldn't have been worse. Three weeks earlier, Soviet fighters had shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007, killing all 269 people aboard. Cold War tensions were running as hot as they had in years.
Petrov's job was to evaluate the warning and pass it up the chain of command. He didn't buy it. A real American first strike would be a massive launch meant to wipe out any chance of Soviet retaliation, not five missiles. The satellite system was also new, and ground radar hadn't confirmed anything.
He reported it as a false alarm.
Then he sat there for roughly 23 minutes, about the time those missiles would need to reach their targets, with alarms going and everyone in the room waiting on him. If he'd guessed wrong, warheads were already in the air and he'd just told his superiors nothing was happening.
Nothing happened. Investigators later found the satellites had mistaken sunlight reflecting off high-altitude clouds for missile launches.
You'll often hear that Petrov "saved the world." That's a stretch. He had no hand on a launch button, and his report would have passed through more layers of command before anyone decided to retaliate. Nobody can say what Soviet leaders would have done.
What we do know matters enough. A warning system reported a nuclear attack that wasn't real, during one of the tensest stretches of the Cold War, and Petrov got it right instead of taking the machine's word for it. The danger that year was real, too. Less than two months later, during NATO's Able Archer 83 exercise, declassified intelligence shows parts of the Soviet military preparing for immediate nuclear use out of fear of a Western attack.
Petrov never cared for the hero label. Making that call was his job, and he made it.
That's worth remembering in 2026. Computers, experts, social media, AI: they can all hand you information, but none of them take the responsibility off you for deciding whether it makes sense. When something authoritative tells you something big, check it against what else you know. Don't dismiss it, and don't just obey it either.
Petrov checked. For 23 very long minutes, that was enough.

His name was Lance Sotelo.
Lance grew up in Dalton, Georgia, and was a cross-country MVP in high school.
He came to Queens University of Charlotte and ran cross country and track and field for SIX YEARS.
He was the student body president.
On January 14th, Lance was doing the thing he loved most, he was out for a run in Charlotte NC
At 5:47 in the evening, police say 28-year-old Q'Laundra Hood was ran a red light and she hit him, hard.
...and then she drove away.
She left him in the road and kept going.
Lance Sotelo died right there on the streets of Charlotte.
He never even made it to a hospital.
He didn't have life insurance, his family had to start a GoFundMe just to bury their son.
Hood turned herself in and pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter.
And on Tuesday, a courtroom packed with Lance's family and friends watched the judge hand down the sentence.
30 days in jail. And probation.
Thirty days and $765 restitution.
