When we set off on our mission to transform the #Zimbabwe economy, there was of course cynicism. But fast forward three years and the environment is entirely different. The painful reforms we initiated in late 2018 are beginning to bear fruit. bit.ly/3f0fLDO

Day 3 of the 2027 National Pre-Budget Seminar afternoon session , Portfolio Chair Hon. E. Maoneke outlined critical funding priorities for Ministries under the Portfolio Committee on Defence and War Veterans Affairs.
He stressed that resources are urgently required to maintain core administrative functions, honour war victims’ compensation, and sustain welfare support.
Submissions strongly advocated for an upward revision of the sector's funding ceiling, prioritising improved living allowances, housing initiatives for war collaborators and the recapitalisation of key investment vehicles.
During the plenary session, stakeholders emphasized robust domestic resource mobilization driven by the "veterans' economy."
Key proposals focused on commercializing state-held business enterprises and partnering with private investors to reactivate idle assets across mining, agriculture and tourism.
Regarding the Ministry of Defence, discussions highlighted pressing operational requirements and necessary infrastructure upkeep.
It was indicated that ground and air assets require routine servicing, while long-overdue housing and medical facilities must be brought to completion.
Delegates reiterated that strong defence capabilities remain vital to national security and economic stability, requesting dedicated funding for essential logistics including fuel, rations, uniforms and specialized training programs.
To enhance financial self-sustenance, Hon. Maoneke noted that consultations recommended commercializing strategic business units within the defence portfolio.
Immediate interventions were urged to finish stalled military hospital and cantonment infrastructure projects, alongside funding for national mine-clearance operations and defence research and development.
Finally, consultations regarding the Ministry of Home Affairs underscored the vital link between national identity management and state security.

Congratulations to Christine Lagarde on her extraordinary leadership of the European Central Bank. It has been my pleasure working with her through some of the most consequential moments of the past two decades.
She has been a tower of strength and humanity in every role she has held. I know her service will continue long into the future.
And while she has more than earned the much-needed break she deserves, I know that many, myself included, will continue to turn to her for advice and counsel.
I have just informed my colleagues that I will step down as @ECB President on 7 February 2027.
It has been a source of great pride to serve this institution.
I thank all of those who have supported me on this journey over the past seven years.

DAY 3 PRE-BUDGET SEMINAR
Day Three of the National Pre-Budget Seminar centred on key proposals submitted to the Ministry of Finance. Among other Ministries, the Youth and Sports Ministries laid out future priority submissions to align spending with national development.
The Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture presented its review, confirming funds were used effectively for priority programs. The ministry noted that all remaining balances are fully committed to active national projects.
Submissions to Treasury emphasized the critical need for more predictable cash releases during major international fixtures. Funding regional and continental tournaments like the Youth Olympic Games required significant reallocations from approved budgets.
On infrastructure, submissions made clear that completing modernization works at the National Sports Stadium remains critical. Priorities also include continued upgrades to regional venues, university gymnasiums, and sports centres nationwide.
The Sports Ministry submitted a strong case for expanding cultural infrastructure to preserve national heritage. Projects like the Njelele community cultural centre demonstrate how targeted investment expands access to creative industries.
Submissions detailed a successful external resource mobilization strategy involving non-state institution partnerships. These collaborations funded energy upgrades, anti-doping education, and Paralympic games to reduce reliance on central government funds.
Turning to youth development, the Youth Ministry submitted a compelling case that funding young people is an economic necessity. Addressing youth unemployment and substance abuse requires practical policies backed by consistent financial releases.

Zimbabwe consumed 1.22 billion litres of diesel in the first nine months of 2026, up 14.4% from 1.07 billion litres in the same period in 2025, according to ZERA data.
Diesel consumption reached a record 165.9 million litres in April 2026, the highest monthly figure since records began in 2009.

Zimbabwe is rising, and the numbers now confirm it. As of October 2026, according to the IMF, Zimbabwe is ranked the 14th largest economy in Africa with a GDP of $65.92 billion. In the same year, our economy grew by 5%, with a projected 3.5% growth in 2027 despite the El Niño challenge. This is not by chance, it is the result of deliberate and disciplined economic management.
This progress is a direct dividend of the fiscal discipline restored under the Second Republic. Under the visionary and steady leadership of President E.D. Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe has moved from deficits to surpluses, from volatility to stability, and from uncertainty to confidence. Budgetary order, a stable currency, controlled inflation and renewed investor confidence are now driving real, productive growth across all sectors.
What we are witnessing is Vision 2030 in motion. Zimbabwe is no longer on the sidelines; we are now counted among Africa's top economies and we are outperforming many traditional giants. This is the Second Republic delivering results for its people, and with unity and continued hard work, we will keep building the prosperous Zimbabwe we all want.
