The following rant will mean nothing to like 99% of people. With that being said, as many know I'm working on DeathSim Season 5 and was setting up the server side for closed testing. I had to download a specific Java version because the Origins mod is incredibly picky. Simple right? Just go to the archive on the website. Problem is I needed specifically the JDK 17.0.15, All versions newer than JDK 17.0.12 require a login. They've seemingly patched every simple way around it. I spent fucking hours only for me to give in and just use a mirror from microsoft. I had to use winget via powershell to install. I'm familiar enough with linux to be able to figure out how to utilize winget like any other package manager. Issue number 2, Winget will download the latest version if you don't properly specify the exact version number you want. Version number I wanted wasn't listed as an actual version in any of the mirror repos I could find. For some reason the correct version was mislabled as 17.0.15.6 on the microsoft mirror. No documentation anywhere else even implies that there's a 4th number to version java versions. Yet microsoft's mirror seems to have nothing but these specific versions. I had to uninstall and reinstall Java every time I got the wrong version because Winget doesn't let you get more than one version at a time of the same package. Furthermore it doesn't let you overwrite your existing package with a specified version if that version is older than the one currently installed. Only solution seemingly was to uninstall and reinstall the version I wanna try. Were there scripts to do this? Actually yes. Issue is most of them weren't updated for years or just sketched me out too much due to the nature of some of the links being used. Trying to convince a computer that 2 and 3 aren't equal was a confusing enough situation to be in for season 4. Now I had to spend fucking 4ish hours just to get the exact java version I needed. That time isn't including the time spent trying to actually find out which Java version I needed. Cause for some reason with the Origins mod an incorrect Java version will STILL FUCKING LOAD? Just breaks origin abilities among other oddities. Basically I needed to playtest EVERY FUCKIN JAVA VERSION that minecraft 1.20.1 supports until I found the right one where all the abilities worked properly without issue. I found that JDK 17.0.15 is actually like really stable and chill. It's the default version that comes with curseforge and is recommended by default. Of course unless you need to download Java manually for whatever reason. Like if you were going to run a server or something. Anyways, problem is solved. I got there in the end server is in pregen stage for closed testing and setup now.
