A major El Niño event is now underway over the tropical Pacific Ocean.
The current sea surface temperatures being recorded in the central equatorial Pacific and reversing trade winds suggest this could be the strongest El Niño in the entire instrumental record (1850-present). It could even rival the Great El Niño of 1789 -93 which caused several failed Asia monsoons and changed earth’s weather patterns for years. There is no written evidence of the conditions experienced in NZ, but conditions and temperatures recorded by ships in the tropical South Pacific were colder and drier than usual in the period between 1789 to 1793.
It remains unknown what this event's impact will be on the upper North Island for the upcoming Spring and Summer as past very strong El Niño events have varied in modern times. But it will most likely feel much different to the La Niña flooding rains and ex-tropical storms of the last few years.
An interesting 6 months ahead.
The small 9/10 next to the gas price means nine-tenths of one cent per gallon.
For example:
$3.49⁹⁄₁₀ = $3.499 per gallon
$4.25⁹⁄₁₀ = $4.259 per gallon
What? Just learned this today everyone else know this?
Can’t even pay this way.

Introducing CADGenBench: measure how well AI systems produce engineering-grade 3D parts!
While current models can generate 3D parts, they are far from precise enough to build functional parts. We built a benchmark to systematically measure their capabilities on two tasks:
1. Generation from an engineering drawing of a part
2. Editing: given an existing STEP file and a requested change
The benchmark is tool-agnostic. It makes no assumptions about how you build the model. You can vary the LLM, and you can vary the environment. Use build123d, Onshape, Autodesk, or a model without an LLM entirely. We open sourced the scoring engine and a reference baseline on top of build123d.
