An early look at 2026 shows 12 consecutive years of underwriting gains and payroll growth of more than 4%. Watch NCCI's Chief Actuary and Product Officer, Donna Glenn, share preliminary results for 2026, ow.ly/B8UC5102fHf then dive deeper by reading the State of the Line Update: The Latest Results in 2026 article: ncci.com/Articles/Pages/Insi…
The share of lost-time claims involving workers aged 65 and older doubled, rising from 4% in Accident Year 2012 to 8% in 2025. Similarly, the share of claims involving female workers increased over the study period, rising from 33% in Accident Year 2012 to 36% in 2025.
Our latest report uses NCCI medical claims data to examine how changes in the age and gender demographic of injured workers relate to medical utilization, and what factors explain those differences.
Key findings:
- Age and gender gaps in medical care are driven by diagnosis mix, treated comorbidities, and job types
- Claims for workers aged 65 and older have doubled since 2012 and require 21% more care on average, primarily due to chronic health conditions and diagnoses
- Claims for male workers require 28% more care on average than claims for female workers, primarily due to industry mix and diagnosis types
Understanding these underlying drivers can help improve future utilization projections and provide valuable insight into emerging trends in workers compensation medical severity.

Key Takeaways:
As of July 31, 2026, NCCI monitored 1,102 state and federal bills and 210 proposed workers compensation–related regulations. Of those, 167 bills were enacted and 90 regulations were adopted.
This year, worker classification bills increased noticeably, mostly related to portable benefits legislation for independent contractors across states.
Most 2026 mental injury legislation dealt with who qualifies for coverage, which conditions qualify, and which medical professionals can diagnose.
This year's Issues Spotlight covers workers compensation alternatives, workplace safety, artificial intelligence, and zero-estimated exposure policies.
📈Consistent with the expectations in July's Medical Inflation Insights, the Workers Compensation Weighted Medical Price Index (WCWMI) saw a series of small accelerations in the pace of price increases in the third quarter. Underlying trends have continued and NCCI expects the year-over-year pace of growth in the WCWMI to trend upward towards a 2.0% to 2.5% range over the next several quarters. #NCCI #workerscomp
