ICYMI: On Wednesday, a coalition of 17 attorneys general, led by @AGIowa Brenna Bird and @NEAttorneyGen Mike Hilgers, announced a settlement with Snap Finance worth nearly $665 million, and almost all of it goes to consumers.
This deal is yet another example of the distinctive power of state attorneys general as they deliver relief to consumers that Washington’s alphabet soup of agencies often can’t.
More on the settlement in my latest for @NRO 👇🏻

Thanks, @JonHaidt, for your insight into the importance of our lawsuits. Grateful for your work on alerting parents to how social media and smartphone-based childhood are harming young people’s mental health
Last week two different chatbot companies were in the news. First, Character. ai filed for bankruptcy, in an effort to avoid accountability. New reporting suggests Disney asked the company to file for bankruptcy as part of their deal to acquire the technology. They didn’t want to buy the company outright because of the legal liability. Kids were harmed. That debt does not disappear in bankruptcy court.
Then eight state AGs filed coordinated lawsuits against OpenAI this week. First coordinated state action against an AI company. The allegations: deceiving parents about safety, designing products that create emotional dependency in children, and failing to protect young users from self-harm content. Nebraska’s suit is the one to watch. It’s the first enforcement action brought under a state design code law. That’s a milestone worth marking.
While CharacterAI seeks to use the bankruptcy process as a get out of jail free card, OpenAI’s defense? Parental controls. We’ve heard that before. You cannot parental-control your way out of dangerous design. The burden of proof belongs on these companies.
These stories show the AI chatbot industry is running the same playbook social media ran. Race to scale. Worry about safety later. We know how that story ends.

Only a scammer says they’re from the FTC, you’ve won a lottery or sweepstakes, and have to pay taxes or a fee first. Only a scammer says the FTC has a “refund” for you and asks for your bank account information. The real FTC will never do that. Learn more: bit.ly/4zK8X4L

ALT The image is an infographic from the Federal Trade Commission. It features a phone screen displaying a call from "Federal Trade Commission" and text stating, "Did someone say they’re from the FTC and ask you for money, threaten to arrest you, or promise you a prize? That’s a scam. The FTC will never do that." A web address, ftc.gov/imposters, is provided for more details. The background has the FTC seal and logo.
